Here in Salt Lake City, UTah, and probably in other cities as well, there is growing concern about a scene in the film "like Mike". The scene involves how the main character, played by "lil bow bow" (i hate rappers), where he gets his "magic shoes" by retrieving them from a live power line.

The community here is upset with this depiction, as the target audience is young enough to believe that this is a good thing to try at home once this crappy movie is over.

Fox has issued a statement saying that this film is a "depiction of magic shoes, and not meant to be taken litteraly. Fox in no way condones the fanciful actions depicted in the movie". If they don't condone it, then maybe they should have thought about this one.

Most parents just drop thier kids off at the theater without supervision.

My thought is this...

...If some kid is dumb enough to climb a power line and retrieve a pair of shoes, let em fry!!! Thats one less person on the government cheese.

"...if some kid is dumb enough to climb a power line and retrieve a pair of shoes, let em fry!!!"

Perfect example of natural selection. We'll look forward to that in the next Darwin Awards.

The uproar isn't coming from the "family values" crowd. It's coming from the power companies.

FWIW, Fox thought about opening Like Mike yesterday but found out a Tuesday opening would have given bookers a collective heart attack.

Some theatres are posting disclaimers at their box offices as a public service announcement on behalf of the power utilities reminding guests of the dangers of overhead powerlines and to not retrieve anything from them.

I agree with Dave, take some personal responsibility and let's clean out the gene pool.

Anyone remember "The Program"? I worked at a theater that played it only for its first 2 weeks, so we didn't get to deal with the replacement reel with the scene taken out. We had some drunk frat boys lie down in the street in front of the theater though!

It seems every day I get another "oh geez" example of just how STUPID people can be. Count me in as one more vote for a clearing house of the geen pool.

Don't forget WHERE you live....the city full of weenies, geeks, and religous morons. I live here too and its all part of the local scene, game, or what ever you want to call it........Of course someone here is going to bring up something stupid like that. Would you expect anything less? Is there anyone that CAN clean out the genepool in this town??

I wasn't gonna bring this up, but Mark (the Salt Lake "native" ) cleared the way: Do they even allow rap music there? After all, if the New Orleans Jazz wouldn't have moved there, they prolly wouldn't know what basketball or rap music is.

I've always heard that a pair of tennis shoes hanging from the powerlines meant that a drug dealer lived in the house the lines served. The "magic powers" that lil bow wow receives as a result of these shoes is a CLEAR and UNDENIABLE reference to the professional sports teams and their embrace of performance enhancing illegal drugs. I, for one, am going to post notices that, though FOX thinks that this is an acceptable lesson for todays youth, we in no way condone drug use. Flubber, on the other hand, should be legalized.

Phil,
I agree with you to a point, but SLC seems to have more than the normal share of Religeous morons, and from these folk stem more than the normal number of geeks, and weenies that a city normally has. It actually makes living here somewhat amusing at times as the morons and geekness transmit over into the politics of the whole operation. This really becomes fun to watch and is quite different than the stuff that spills over to politics in other cities......anyway you get my drift.
You can play RAP music here but not on a certain section of Main Street as you will get arrested. That certain section of Main Street also has a dress code as well and if you don't meet it you will be escorted out!! Quite rediculous for a public place if you ask me.....
Mark
P.S. I am a Chicago Suburb native, not SLC. That makes all of this all the more amusing.....

Yes Mark, I have a way of clearing out our gene pool here. A good dose of Democrats ought to do the trick. We don't have enough here.

And oh yes, aren't we the only city in America where a private church, who happens to just about run the place, actually own a piece of public land. Our locally owned and operated church here purchased an actual street, cutting off traffic for a whole block, and turned it into a religeous oasis from hell.

But it really is very cute though, I mean the whole thing just makes me laugh. Living here is quite a hoot.
