Mother arraigned after locking kids in hot car.
Posted: 7/2/2002

Detroit - 25-year-old Tarajee Maynor is in the Oakland County Jail, without bond, for the heat deaths of her two small children.

She left her 10-month-old daughter and her three-year-old son in the hot car, with the windows up, for over three hours while she got her hair done.

She was arriagned Sunday on felony murder charges and faces life in prison, without parole, if convicted.

She also drove around Detroit for two hours trying to come up with a story to tell the police. She told the police that she was kidnapped and raped. So that was why the kids were left in the car. This state does not have the death penalty, I say give her life, and lock her in a small black car for three hours a day so she knows how her kids suffered.

YES, I heard, but Brad frowns on "teaser" titles for threads.

Someone that does something like that does not deserve to have kids. I wonder what she was smoking? I have no sympathy for her whatsoever. I hope she gets strung up by the Gizzotch!

Michigan doesn't support capital punishment? That's rather surprising. Michigan sucks.

Wew had a woman here in Kentucky that left two children she was baby sitting in the car with the windows rolled up while she went into a beauty shop to get her hair done. One of the children died the other lived. I can't remember what kind of sentance she got for this stupidity.

She should be given a fair trial and then her hair done and bleached and then fried in the electric chair.... Oh, no electric chair in Michigan... Ummmm send her to "Old Sparky" in Florida... set on low volts to allow sufficient "cooking" time.

Phil -- If I'm not mistaken, I think they retired "old sparky" last year. Then again, I could be mistaken

That happened last year in Perry, IA too. The woman was acquitted if my memory serves me right.

I know the general population is getting stupider with each passing day, but COME ON! Just the mere fact that when this lady gets into her car that it is hot should be enough to say to herself "hey me, do I really want to put my kids through this kind of heat while I go get my hair done? Never mind the fact that I might just KILL them with the heat, but am I such a mean spirited bitch that I want my kids to suffer in this kind of heat?" Oh yeah lady, you're a GREAT parent!

It's things like this that make me wish that the courts would decide the punishment for a crime like this, then tack on extra years based on the stupidity of the crime.

Hey ladies, does it really take three HOURS to get your hair done? I could see an hour, maybe even two, but three??? That's longer than a Costner flick! It's ashamed the kids weren't old enough to figure out how to hot-wire the car. They certainly had enough time. They could have turned on the air conditioning and waited for their wonderful parent to come out with perfect hair, then run her over!!!

(And yes, "teaser" subject titles are extremely annoying. Please read the FAQ. )

Stories like this one just freak me out. Seems like this tragic scenario plays out more often than any of us would imagine. Earlier this year I saw a "caught on tape" TV show where they found 2 kids crying in a minivan. An off-duty police officer was coming out of a grocery store when he heard the kids screaming. He called for emergency services and I guess that's how the TV crew found out about it. They managed to get the oldest kid (about 2 yrs) to open the side "wing" window at the back of the minivan and you would have just cried to see him pressing his face toward the crack to get some fresh air.

The mother emerged from inside the grocery store with a full shopping cart, just as the fire department was about to smash open the driver's window.

The mother had a really stupid "whats-going-on" expression on her face. She said she was only gone for a couple of minutes...to get a few things...

Did I mention that the shopping cart was full of groceries?

She got a severe tongue-lashing from Social Services, EMT workers, Police officers and also the Fire Dept.

Like I said, I've known of quite a number of similar incidents...

...is it ever the father who locks the kids in the car...?

~Manny.

Same situation happened to us about a month ago.

Our two year old took my wifes keys to the Beretta, opened the door and locked himself in the car. This happened at home in the driveway. He couldn't figure out how to "unlock" the doors, so he just played with the buttons and horn until he got too hot. My wife was freaking out!! She called me at the office in Nashville, and I immeadiately left the office to drive the 30 minutes back home. He had already been in there about 15-20 minutes. Once he started crying, she ran over to the neighbors house to call the police. They came and removed the window glass from the car without breaking it. She said it took them all of 10 seconds to get him out.

The cop ripped the trim of the rear side window, pulled some wire loop from the bottom of the glass and the glass just popped right out.
He said all cars have that... but most people just use a brick!

We now have EXTRA keys to the cars and the house!!

The judge in this case has reduced the charges to involuntary manslaughter. Also, the incident occurred in a suburb.

(Thanks to The Obscure Store for the link.)
