I have always felt that his real "Oscar" should have been for The Pawnbroker". He is and always will be "The Pawnbroker".

As he would wish...."See ya later." RS

Just one of Rod Steiger's many talents was his ability to transform himself in a role so that I could not recognize him by facial appearance or body language. How different he looked and acted in his roles as a Holocaust victim pawnbroker, and that of a swaggering Southern sheriff! The man had acting genius and will be sorely missed.

Bob: Thank you so much for saying that! Actually, you beat me to it. 'The Pawnbroker' is one of my favourite films. I am glad to see that it has not been forgotten!

Everything about that movie is absolutely first-rate: Sidney Lumet's masterful direction, Quincy Jones' amazing jazz score, Boris Kaufman's striking black-and-white cinematography and of course some of the most innovative film editing ever by Ralph Rosenblum.

But Rod Steiger owns that movie, absolutely! He, as you say, is 'The Pawnbroker'.

Ralph Rosenblum devotes several chapters of his craft autobiography,
"When The Shooting Stops" to his editing of The Pawmbroker. He really
gets to the heart of the creative process of decision-making the editor lives and works with, as well as his relationships with the director, D.P, and actor. It's a fascinating book, with some insightful comments on Rod Steiger. Long out of print, it has been re-issued in softbound edition.

Thanks, Gerard! I didn't know there was a book about his work. I will try and obtain a copy.

I read Sidney Lumet's excellent book, 'Making Movies' and thoroughly enjoyed it.

My dad played "Jud Frye" in a local production of "OKLAHOMA!" back in the 1960's. In the 1970's, I finally got to see a 16mm print of the feature. Rod Steiger was evil in his role. Scary. Great.

I liked him in all of his roles. I miss him. Good thing we have all of these films so that we can see just how good an actor he was.

Rod Steiger, what an actor. It is people like he who give great performances that make being part of this industry so terrific. To play even a small part in bringing such work to the screens so that the public can enjoy it is what makes this job worthwhile.

So, Rod, if you're listening..thanks!!
