A friend in France sent me a clipping from her local paper. Unless my translation is way out, this sounds almost as nasty as the Mexican doctor...

Woman blown up on Lavatory
A woman from Dax is recovering in hospital following an explosion at a flat in Rue Gambetta, Arcachon, where she was staying with relatives. Neighbours reported hearing a loud bang shortly after midday on Sunday, and later found the victim unconscious in the bathroom. An ambulance was called and the unnamed woman was later taken to Bordeaux. She is being treated for a fractured arm, cuts and brusises and second-degree burns to the anus.

A police spokeswoman would not say what had caused the accident, as this is now the subject of an investigation by the Prefecture. Other residents in the block, however, have speculated that a build-up of methane gas in the building's sewerage system may have been responsible for the explosion. 'There has been a foul smell throughout the whole block for weeks,' said neighbour Jeanne Lelievre, 32. 'We've asked the landlord to get it fixed many times, but he hasn't done anything.' It is believed that a cigarette was found next to the woman.
