It is also called "Soda" here in America's only tropical island state, Hawaii.

In Montana, the terms appear to be interchangeable. Hear them both all the time. I hear the slang-ish "sode" (rhymes with road) occasionally too.

There is a story running on the AP wire about just this topic, complete with a map of the results.

I've been in so many places, I just called it "a beverage" so at least I know why people look at me funny.

In the South it is usually referred to as "Soda". Sometimes I have heard people say "Coke" as a generic name for all the sodas. The term "Pop" is not used in the South. I believe that it is primarily Northern.

What about soda-pop? I usually only hear soda when refering to fountain pop.

Most people around here (Oklahoma) refer to the drinks by their brand names. I have heard "soda", "pop" and "soda-pop" all used from time to time. I remember some radio commercial for some kind of beverage where some people with extreme-exaggerated southern accents were using "sod-ee pop". Can't remember what the hell that drink was, but I do remember someone going, "woooweeee! that shaure doo gotta bite!"

Down here we call it Soda. No one here says "pop"

I heard the news story, too. I've often wondered about the breakdown across regions.

I'm from KY originally, and it was "pop" there - I grew up saying it. When I lived in Texas and Oklahoma, the terms seemed to be 50-50, as Bobby noted. In IL, Chicago specifically, it was "pop".

However, for the past 4 years, I've been in S. FL (little New York) and now MA. Since my wife is from PA, and because our kids are growing up in the East... it's "soda" in our family.

Mostly, though, I just say "something to drink".

It's soda here in Manhattan and soda or coke in Los Angeles.

Only the bartender, knows for sure.
