"As the cost of going to the movies has escalated to $20 or so for a ticket, parking and popcorn, teens are paying more attention to the fact that the movie will be out on DVD in just four or five months at a rental fee of $4 or $5 or a purchase price of $12-$15."1. What theater charges for parking? 2. In my experience DVD's cost $15-$25 3. Here in good ol' Indiana a movie and popcorn (and a drink if you want it) costs Under $20.. . . . Now what they pay the staff, well, that's different.

Methinks he's setting himself up for the failure of the next SW film. Besides, all of his information is anecdotal. And if it's true that the industry can only succeed if teens are willing to see a movie four or five times, then it deserves to fail anyway. If movie attendance is falling off, maybe it's because most movies suck. But IMHO (and also based on anecdotal evidence), it's not the teens who are staying home. Teens want to get out of the house and hangout with their friends. But I bet more young marrieds, especially if they have kids, are staying home and watching DVDs. In NYC, movies are $10. Small popcorn is probably $4 and the smallest soda is probably $3.50. So without dinner and parking, movies for three (assuming one is a child) is going to cost at least $39 and that's if the kid doesn't get their own snacks. I'm not saying a $10 ticket is too expensive....but in tough economic times, people are counting their dollars even if they still have jobs. A few studio failures might be a good thing for the industry. In the late 60's, when movie fans last gave up on the tired old studio formula films and the studios tried to pawn off the last of the musicals (Paint Your Wagon), a new age of independent filmmaking developed (as well as an interest in foreign films) that gave us Bertolucci, Truffaut, Spielberg, Coppola, Bogdonovich, Scorsese, DePalma, etc. I, for one, wouldn't mind seeing a few more films that didn't have "franchise" and "product placement" written all over them.
