The other topic "Who do you boycott and why" has already received 70 responses and because this is the first day of a new year, I would like to turn that topic around and be more positive.

Instead of one, there are two business I have supported over the years and will always continue to support them. First is Consolidated (Pacific) Theatres. Although they have closed my favorite theatres, all three regular theatres in Waikiki, they were good enough to retain the people who worked there by offering them jobs at other theatres. All of their theatres are clean and the staff very friendly. The presentation at all of the theatres I attend are excellent with fantastic picture and sound presentations. The 2nd business I support is Tower Records and video. Their prices are not as good as online vendors or Costco but they seem to always have what I want at the time I want them. Many of the people who work at Tower are my friends and treat me very well and I appreciate that,

I try to support the smaller buisness place when ever possible, rather than the large chain retailers. Salt has more than the usual amount of "small" buisness operators so its easier to do that here. The only large chain theatre location I support is the Villa Theatre which is sadly operated by Carmike.
Also the forum www.diyaudio.com which is to audio what Film-Tech is to film. Both are equally great sites.

What Mark said. Whenever possible, I like to support small Mom & Pop places. You meet more interesting people that way!

Ah, a good thread to praise some businesses:

Gigaparts (Huntsville, AL):

The last time I bought a new computer, I went to a local place called GigaParts. They built me an AMD Athlon 1900 system with which I'd had no problems.

Last week, I bought a USB 2.0 card since I have two portable drive enclosures that provide a USB 2.0 interface to standard IDE drives. After using these drives (128 GB and 120 GB) at work with USB 2.0 with no difficulties, I went to GigaParts and bought a USB 2.0 card, since USB 1.x was just too slow for these drives on my home machine. As soon as I tried to write to a drive in USB 2.0 mode, the machine locked. I went back to GigaParts and told them of the problem -- they exhanged the card for another which did not resolve the problem. I then took the system with a USB 2.0 drive to them. In short, the technician that worked on my system spent a good bit of time trying to make the card work (by working with the device drivers and putting it in different PCI slots) before "flashing" the BIOS, which fixed the system. They didn't charge me anything. I expected to pay an hours' worth of labor.

Here's the best part -- when I got there to pick up my computer, the technician had my hsvmovies.com WWW page up and was asking me questions about film formats (35mm and IMAX and such). While showing him my "Vistavision" diagram, I explained that IMAX was like that, but about twice as wide, and 15 performations per frame. I apologized to him for not having any 65mm diagrams on the page. While talking to him, I "torture tested" the USB 2.0 drive, by copying 2 GB of data to it while playing an MP3 stored on it. It's worked fine.

I gave the guy $30 since I felt he deserved something for his efforts and was getting no money. Some dishonest shops could have charged several hours labor and charged for parts that were not faulty. They didn't. I get the impression that this shop is honest and I'll definitely continue to do business with them and recommend them to others.

Rosies Mexican Cantina (Huntsville, AL, 2 locations):

For several years, once a week, people from where I work, along with other friends, have gone to this Mexican restaurant. There are now two of them, both of which have equivalent food and service. The consistency and quality of both the food and service have been outstanding ever since the first location opened several years ago. This is the Regal River Oaks Cinema 8 of restaurants in my area.

Longhorn Steak House (Huntsville, AL):

A couple of friends and I have been going to this steak house a couple of times a month on Sunday nights and have had excellent food. The service has been very good as well.

Green Hills Grille (Huntsville, AL):

This restaurant opened in 1992 and is one of the best restaurants in the area. Food is typically excellent and so is the service. I try to go there at least once a month.

Regal River Oaks Cinema 8 (Decatur, AL):

Best movie presentation quality/consistency in the Huntsville/Decatur area.

This is about Atlanta:

I used to support the General Cinemas (sandy SPrings, Atlanta) which used to have a THX audotrium and fair prices. Sadly, it closed and that EFW scam company bought it and closed it.

I used to be loyal to AMC because the projection was better than Carmike and UA in my area. Also AMC Phipps used to host independent movie festivals. Sadly, AMC Phipps has been suffering from lack of care to presentation and are no longer the primary patron of indie festivals (Lefont chain concentrates mainly on movie exhibitions, not festivals). Also AMC Mansell has been downright atrocious in sound and picture brightness in recent years. Customer service is no longer than great either.

I would like to support Lefont Gardfen Hills and UA Tara movie theaters since they show a lot of independent type movies, but their projection quality is pretty bad.
Tara specifically is a joke. Even their big auditoriums are narrow and make up for that in the number of rows which gives them the shoebox look. Projection is dim and not sharp. Sound is average at best.

I go to our Local single screen as much as possible "The Hollywood" but otherwise I go to the Westgate Village 8 (West Auckland) but last week I had Free Tickets to "Harry Potter" and not too much time so decided to go to our Local Village 8 (West City's Westfeild Shoppingtown) which I had previous Bad experiences , but maybe they had improved (sadly Not!)if I had to pay it would be $13 per Adult and not too much less for Children , No 3 cinema had an annoying out of alignment mirror (Dark in the top corners) and a wondering flickering bright spot , which looked like the bulb was well past it's use by date , the sound was too low ..... for the prices they charge you would expect better presentation . I enjoy eating dinner in many different restaurant's in New York but like Evans we have a Rosa Mexicana on First Avenue in New York that has the best Mexican food. Better than in Mexico itself. The Guacomole is to die for. Top of the Beekman Tower's on 49th and First has the best views with great dining and of course chilled Gibson's.

I also like to buy from the Mom & Pop stores that NY has a ton of-and these are hard working people and in the neighborhoods they are like family.

I love going to the museums, Broadway Shows, and Comedy clubs and of course Movies. Unless of course Walker Texas Ranger is on TV then I stay home and put it on both TV's so I won't miss a bit of Cordell Walker(better know as Chuck Norris) fighting for right and justice.

Continue to watch this post as I will update from time to time.

When in Newport - Rhode Island Catch The Saucy Sylvia Show at The Hyatt Regency on Goat Island and you can all come and hear me sing.
I'll be the one drinking the Maartini's. [Smile]

Evans: I did not think the restaurants had the same owners just a similar name. [Smile]

Brad: I would bet that there are many people in Dallas who like and appreciate "Chuck Norris". I know you ae only putting me on. I know you askedJoe Redifer and Dwayne Caldwell and James R. Hammonds Jr. to agree with you. But the truth be known and you polled www.film-tech.com members I would guess that 87.75 per cent will agree with my point of view. Oh! Yes and by the way, my vote counts for_____%. I will fill in the blank when I see the results of the poll. [Wink]

In Newport - The Canfield House Restaurant is spectaular. The food is superb. It overlooks the U.S. Tennis Hall of Fame. Originally, it was built as a Casino for the the Vanderbilts, Whitney's, Astor's in Newport where the Rich and Famous built their summer cottages. Cole Porter also wrote many of his songs in Newport.

If any of you run into Chuck Norris tell him he is more than welcome in New York,NY or Newport, RI or even Newtown, CT where I work. [Smile]

The Garden Theatre in Princeton NJ. Reopened in 2001 as a twin with stadium seating and Dolby Digital. The Garden is upmarket/arthouse but plays the occasional mainstream title (A Beautiful Mind, Star Wars Episode 2, Road to Perdition). If a movie I want to see is not in Manville or the AMC Hamilton, I'll usually see it at the Garden.

In an eerie case of synchronicity I saw Apocalypse Now Redux at the Garden on 9/9/2001.

Living in a relatively small city in Oregon, I feel lucky to have some good first-run mainstream movie theatres nearby: Regal Cinema World 8, and Cinemark 17. The "dog" locations have been weeded out, and what's left is mostly pretty good in the presentation dept. If Cinemark would just re-EQ their auditoriums... [Razz] [thumbsup]

Jerry's Home Improvement Center (a locally-owned Home-Depot type mega store). [thumbsup]

US Postal Service. Priority Mail rocks, especially for certain ebay transactions. [thumbsup]

Microsoft. For helping ensure the continued employment of people such as myself. [Wink]

Track Town Pizza. Local pizza store -- good food. [thumbsup]

Bob, you need to come to Dallas. Chuck likes to frequent a certain theater here and it's humorous how he stands in the lobby doing his "look at me, I'm Chuck Norris!" impersonation while everyone gives him the shoulder. If you came to Dallas, you could be the first person to go up to him and satisfy his hunger for attention. [Razz]

To clarify, the Rosies Mexican Cantina (2 locations) we have here in Huntsville are locally owned. Actually, there are three. There is a "Little Rosies" which is a fast-food format version of the large full-service ones.

I like to patronize the one-of-a-kind "mom and pop" eateries. There's a lot of fine places to eat without having to go to the major chain restaurants. [thumbsup]

You guys are making me feel very hungry. The nice thing about Consolidated's Ward 16 theatres is the fact that it is the hub of a very trendy entertainment complex in Honolulu with a lot of nice restaurants. The prices at most of the restaurants are very reasonable. There is also a Bose store in this complex and it is here where I bought one of their excellent QuietComfort acoustic noise cancelling headset. I also love Mexican food and there is a good restaurant nearby in the mall.

I never noticed any such behavior from Chuck when he used to come to the UA Prestonwood.

He always came with is girlfriend at the time (always a different one), paid for his ticket, bought some consessions, and went straight to his movie like any other customer.

Emmit Smith was always a "cool customer" too.

Michael Irvin on the other hand.....

No one comes to the theater I'm at now. And I mean NO ONE.
