Interesting site Dick. Another one that could be added to the list is the so called "squeal" tires on an airplane make when it lands on a runway in movies and TV shows. This in fact never happens and the whole thing started on the show Hawaii 5-O years ago.

When are you coming over the pond?

Others:

Hero outrunning an explosion

Fire sprinkler systems where setting off one causes the entire floor's worth of sprinklers to go off. (They don't work like that.)

Dick, count me in for a few pints. Do you care to try some ice fishing while you're here?

Having been in and around planes my whole life, I can assure you that tires on airplanes can, and often do, squeal when landing.

Some causes of this are:
  • Landing while drifting a little to the left or right.
  • Landing hard - the tire drags momentarily before it can roll on it's bearing.
  • Landing with the brakes on, or even worn brakes that stick a little.
  • Tires dragging across the pavement sideways as the gear widens upon touchdown (the gear widens and acts like a shock absorber on your car -- that's why the gear is toed in during flight).
  • My favorite to scare your passenger -> brakes locked as you slide to the end of the runway, toward some giant trees.
  • In fact most landing on pavement have at least a tiny squeal, a tire that is not rotating is suddenly forced to go say 50mph... it's going to make some noise.
Here's a picture of the gear toed in on a plane. Once the wings are attatched and half filled with fuel, the tires will sit perpendicular to the ground.

Liking to be around airplanes myself, indeed the tires often squeal as they hit the ground, since they are indeed "burning rubber" with the small puff of smoke you often see as planes land. The touchdown area of runways often are blackened by the deposits of rubber from the squealing tires.

Oh well. I used to watch planes land at the airport in my youth and never once heard a jet do that. Maybe it was the stuff I was smoking at the time. [Cool] Somehow I still feel the sound of a jet landing in the movies is not the same as in real life.

In any case I'll take the tire comment back as new information has been brought to light.

Just to point out that the aircraft still makes a lot of noise with it slicing through the air and the engines still going that the squealing part is there but drowned out due to the noise the plane makes. You know if the tires smoke then that being friction related has got to make some kind of noise.
Kinda like what it sounded like when Chuck N. beat up Joe R. [Wink]

When it comes to physics in movies I always think of the roadrunner who holds up the sign when he doesn't fall to the canyon floor
