For a first time person the questions are, where to go, where to stay where to drink.
At least those are my questions.

ShoWest is Monday, March 3rd through Thursday March 6th at the Bally's/Paris.

If you have a friend in the industry that is exhibiting at the Trade Show, they can get you in on a Trade Show Pass. It does cost money so you must be willing to reimburse them if they ask. Last I heard it was $75. Other than that, a Trade Show Pass is about $400 and a full on ShoWest pass is $775.

Here are some hotel rates I got off of Hotels.com: All of them are within walking distance of the ShoWest.

Hampton Inn Tropicana $89.95
Boardwalk Hotel and Casino $65.95
Flamingo $85.95 (this is a great deal and a good hotel)
Quality Inn Key Largo $45.95
Bourbon Street $75.95 (Creepy Las Vegas at it's best.)
Bellagio $219.95
Venetian $259.95
Paris $189.95

I'm staying at Bally's for about $110 per night.

There will, of course, be a Film-Tech drink on some night, yet to be determined.

Other than that drinking and eating in Las Vegas isn't a problem.

And if you are looking for someplace to eat...

Eating isn't the problem in Las Vegas, deciding is the problem.

At Paris

- Les Artistes Steakhouse - French Steakhouse
- Mon Ami Gabi - Parisian brasserie
- Le Provencal - Italian style restaurant with French flair (Ky and I had quite a good meal here last year.)
- Le Village Buffet - Dishes from five French provinces (Always had a line)
- Le Café Île St. Louis - French coffee shop
- JJ's Boulangerie - French bakery (Good place for Coffee and pastry)
- du Parc - Seasonal Café
- La Chine - Hong Kong-style concept
- Ortanique - Caribbean with Jazz music

At Bally's

Al Dente
Bally's Steakhouse
The Big Kitchen Buffet (Site of the TFF Tech Breakfast)
Chang's at Bally's
Sidewalk Cafe (This Denny's wannabe is the site of many high powered meals before the trade show starts.)
Sterling Brunch

And you haven't even left the property.

If you walk across the street to Bellagio, you will find:

Le Cirque (Yes, that Le Cirque!)
Circo (like Le Cirque (same kitchen)without the tie and the attitude)
Necter
Prime Steakhouse
Picasso
Aqua
Noodles
Jasmine
Olives
Chintaro
The Buffet, Set in the atmosphere of a European marketplace, The Buffet features Italian, Japanese, Chinese and American cuisine as well as an elaborate seafood selection. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. (Site of last year’s Film-Tech Buffet Blowout)

Film-Tech has availed themselves of the Seafood Buffet at the RIO twice in the past years.

Off strip and out of casinos one can still eat, from Paul Mayer.

Great Mexican and margaritas: Lindo Michocan On DI between Eastern & Pecos
British pub and grub: Crown & Anchor On Tropicana east of Maryland Pkwy
Best Japanese buffet (sorry Brad): Makino On Decatur north of Flamingo

From Christopher Duvall

1. Everybody tells me, hands down, Rio is the place for the buffet.
2. As much as I love Caesars Palace, their buffet is EXTREMELY over priced and bland. My wife hated it. They do however, have some really ritzy places in the Forum. Wolfgang Puck has a place there, Spagos, The Cheesecake Factory (drool).
3. The buffet at Sunset Station off of 93/95 in Henderson and Green Valley Ranch off of 215 in Henderson is pretty damn good and at a reasonable rate. Green Valley is where my new theatre is. Historical note...that section of I215 is where the chase of Lethal Weapon 4 was shot.
4. Sam's Town buffet is cheap , but not bad. It ain't great, but you should be able to hold it down. The steak place there is pretty damn good however.
5. Stay away from the Stratosphere. That stench that Brad was talking about is very strong there.
6. The Bellagio...one of the best. Period.
7. The Peppermill near the Riviera is awesome. They have that classic Vegas feel to it as well. Feels like the Rat Pack could walk in anytime.
8. Riviera[b]...sucks!
9. I know I am going to get flamed for this one. I just love the [b]Denny's
on the strip across from the Mirage. Call me a glutton for punishment...
10. Boardwalk Casino buffet made me violently ill. I did not know which end to stick at the toilet.
11. Carroways on the strip is cozy and pretty decent. A classier version of Denny's.
12. Harley Davidson Cafe is so damn expensive but it is so damn good.
13. ESPN Zone just opened up last year during the summer. My brother said it was decent but costly.
14. The buffet at Excalibur is decent.
15. I have not heard anything about the buffet at the Paris, but every time I pass it, it has that funky fishy stench. Note to Brad...avoid.

The options are endless.

This is a distillation of another thread on food at ShoWest.

Greg, if you stay at Ballys you will have little need to go elsewhere except perhaps to explore the Strip or soak up the ambience. With the Paris as its connecting neighbor, everything you could possibly want, and much that few of us can afford, is within easy reach.

Bring good walking shoes since the hotels are huge and a trek from the front of Ballys or from the Paris parking lot, will consume a 15 minute walk each way...plan to walk around since cab rides are expensive...we find it easier to rent a car if we plan to move around with some clients; a couple of cab rides = a small car rental.

I would say it is a good idea to stay in the Ballys or Paris. Last time I was at ShoWest, we had to stay at a neighboring hotel and lemme tell you, it got awful annoying walking back and forth to/from the room, having to negotiate elevators, casinos, parking garages, traffic lights and the like.

If you call Bourbon St. and say you are in Vegas for Vacation, the room rate is $49 a night. That's where several of us are staying this time around. [Smile]

We GOTTA do dinner one night at Quark's again! Maybe with more people this time? [Smile]

I am also up for Bellagio buffet and Rio seafood buffets [Smile]

Though I have never been to ShoWest, I have been to 4 NABs and 2 Comdexes. I have stayed at many hotels in Vegas but the only one I will be going back to is the Gold Coast. The rooms are clean (unlike a certain "5 star" place I stayed at once) reasonably large and have been redecorated in the last few years. The buffet is excellent and cheap, especially at breakfast.

The Gold Coast is not on the strip, but there is a free shuttle that runs to the Barbary Coast which is on the strip - right across the street from Ballys. The best part abut the Gold Coast is they dont raise their rates during conventions. While other hotels double or even triple their usual rates during shows, I have never known the Gold Coast to be more than $50/night.

Well worth considering.

Need to make a minor update to my local restaurant recommendations:

Lindo Michocan suffered a kitchen fire on Thanksgiving night and is currently closed (the owner Javier vows to be back soon). In the mean time his family continues to run their other place Bonito Michocan at the corner of Decatur and Twain (opposite side of town). Same great Margaritas and food!

Unfortunately I will not be attending ShoWest this year, same as last year. My scuffles with IATSE 720's enforcers last year at Ballys just put me off trying to get in again.

Josh and I have our rooms booked in the Bourbon Street Hotel. The rates are better than the Super "8" I booked last year.

Greg, are you driving down to LV?

Paul
At this point I don't know, although I doubt it. I might want to make a detour through Utah if I did.
