In several photos of various Film-tech events, I have noted people wearing tops with "Film-tech" written on them.
Are these clothing items still available, and if so, how can I get some here in Australia?

We may or may not do that this year Aaron. However anyone coming to ShoWest who has been given a shirt (or hat) is encouraged to bring it and wear them on Wednesday, as that will in all probability be our gathering day.

Well, I have accomplished all the above except for ShoWest so I guess I don't qualify. [Frown]

What's a "Top" and what's a "Jumper" ??

I thought a Jumper was a Shirt, but the Shirt was referred to as a Top.

Then I saw Brad mentioned Film-Tech hats. Is a Hat a Jumper??

Am I the only one that's confused [Confused]

A TOP is what you wear on the top half of your body eg. t-shirt, shirt or jumper. A JUMPER is a heavy top, thick woollen or sweat shirt. Maybe it's an aussie thing?
How does it feel to be a JEDI, any diffrent?

Dear colleagues, Thank you to all who replied to my question regards the clothing article.
I should be realistic and leave the matter as is, I may eventually get the required no. of posts but could never attend Showest as I could not afford the fare over to the U.S.
The difference between Aussyspeak and American is a subject in itself, how the same thing is called differently in the two countries.
Re the picture, reinforce your systems as I am currently preparing a mug shot.
Regards, John Spooner. South Australia.

A "jumper" is also an article of women's clothing:

Plaid Jumper

I must agree with Thomas's confusion here. At first I thought it was just another case of 'American English'.

John's term 'top' is incorrect, that word as far as clothing does not exist.
However the term 'topless' does, and it means 'of woman with no covering for breasts'
Therefore the word 'top' without the 'less' means 'covering for breasts'
To conclude (and I am CONFUSED here) 'top' is used in Australia, in a case where you see a female who is NOT 'topless', We say NICE 'top', Now lets see your t*ts (ie. topless)

Now I've really confused everyone, I'll add this 'Jumper' amoung many other things, means 'sweater, pullover'

I'm interested what 'American English' dictionarys define Jumper as. (Is clothing one of them?)
(Don't worry about 'top' it's not even 'Australian English', as in clothing, as so cooly explained above)

I think the best topic John would have been best using is 'Shirts and Sweaters'

NOW. Where is my free jumper????, oh I mean sweater, no wait, Shirt. Thats it! (Yeah I know, all that gets to see me go oplees)

BTW: John, if you read this, there is a thread somewhere that John Pytlak made about this type of thing.

BILL.

Here's a link that pertains to the question exactly:

http://www.purpletrafficlight.net/mikz/soapbox/

quote:
Oh, an explanation of the first paragraph: when Americans talk about wearing a jumper, they're most likely referring to a sleeveless dress, while Australians would be referring to a warm, long-sleeved top. And when Australians ask to borrow a rubber they probably need to remove an erroneous pencil mark, while Americans would be thinking about safer sex if they made the same request.

http://www.m-w.com/dictionary

Main Entry: 2jum·per
Pronunciation: 'j&m-p&r
Function: noun
Etymology: probably from English dialect jump jumper
Date: 1853
1 : a loose blouse or jacket worn by workmen
2 : a sleeveless one-piece dress worn usually with a blouse
3 : a child's coverall -- usually used in plural
4 chiefly British : SWEATER 2

I figured a Jumper was a sweater, but I didn't remember seeing any Film-Tech sweaters, OR sweatshirts for that matter.

Honestly, when I first saw this thread I thought it had something to do with the line of promotional toys coming soon from "Film-Tech Jr." -- Official Film-Tech TOPS and JUMPERS! [Wink]
