The AOL thread started me thinking about my other nightmare dealing with a company...TigerDirect.

A year and a half ago I ordered a 'build your own' system from them which comes with some of the basics and then I added some things I wanted extra.

A few weeks later I get an email saying that the BYO system I wanted was no longer in stock but they would get it sent asap. A week later I get the extras...it was two memory sticks, a fan and a processor. These items were in a 12X12" box. All that was inside as padding were two plastic ballons. The memory sticks were loose (unwrapped) and the processor was just in a little plastic thing and the fan was in a little box. When it arrived it sounded like the box was full of broken china.

I wanted to return the items but their return policy was outrageous! (I don't remember the specifics.) Although they had yet to charge me for the unsent items, they charged me shipping for everything. Finally I receive an email saying they would not be getting any more of the BYO systems I ordered in - but they did not refund the shipping for the unshipped items! I emailed many times but never once received a response. I can't remember why I didn't get anywhere trying to call - just that I didn't.

I looked around online for user ratings of Tigerdirect and found I was not the only one to experience these same problems - particularly with any form of customer service. Of which tigerdirect has none.

By the way, this experience led me to NEWEGG.COM - a great online computer parts sales company with Excellent shipping and customer service!

Dude, you live in LA...what's wrong with Fry's Electronics? We just had one open here in Vegas and I am in love. It's like super-walmart for geeks. They are online as well at...

I live a little over a mile from Fry's and I've not cared for their service, and they're higher priced than NewEgg.com.

I think the following link provides some information as to what to expect upon walking into Fry's...

The one here has been outstanding. They have put every computer and electronics place in the Vegas area to shame. That sucks that the LA area ones are bad. I hope that is not a sign of things to come here. So far the prices have been better as well as their service. I will keep an eye to see what happens and hope for the best...

Mathew, that "online application" is hilarious! The only Fry's I've been to are Houston and Dallas. Houston's is pretty damn good, while the Dallas one is a half-assed version of the Houston store. Theater #10 at the UA/Regal Galaxy in Dallas was assembled with components from Fry's, since it is just down the street a few hundred feet.

I take credit for telling Brad about Newegg. Even if I didn't I take credit anyway!

I've had problems with Tiger direct also. They would not provide a $50 rebate coupon for an LS20 drive a few years ago. Luckly, there are several other people to buy from.

I really liked Buy.com years ago, but now that the 'golden age' of the internet has ended, their prices have gone way uip.

Really I had a pretty good experance with Tiger Direct. I ordered a TV Tuner card from them online and three days later it was in my mailbox no problems. But it was the only time I've ordered something from them so after reading these posts, I may be a little lery ordering from them in the future.

Fry's here in Sacramento sucks ass. I've been twice and both times I was treated rudely and neither time did they have what I needed in stock.

Michael,

I'll second that. I bought the SO a HP setup from them for Christmas '01. I was very pleased with my transaction, altho I do, or did, have a roommate who works in IT and does tech work and such... Still, I had no problems at all... Quite pleased overall what with the price and all..

I, too, may be hesitant to order from them in the future...

I've been to two Fry's stores in the LA Area. The Annheim store and one other....I can't remember where it was...Definately NOT near Disneyland though!
They are just ok in my opinion. Pricing is actually pretty high as compared to our local computer supply outlets here in SLC....A good place to go look at stuff and watch lots of strange people though.

Oh, and I almost forgot ... Fry's has porn! Right there in the middle of the store with all the rest of the DVDs. Sure, they have little covers on the racks to prevent you from accidentally seeing boobies, but there is nothing to prevent children from accessing it.
