Can anybody recommend some good DTS-ES DVDs with discrete ES? I'd like to hear how it sounds. Do any even exist?

Se7en is pretty good. The opening scene in Gladiator is also very good.

Ever since I got my Denon receiver with DTS ES 6.1 discreet and a rear speaker, I have started to collect DVDs that is encoded with that track. In my opinion, two of the best are "THE HAUNTING" and "BONES". As movies, these two suck but they are excellent when it come to the use of DTS ES sound. THe deluxe "THE LORD OF THE RING" and "GOLDMEMBER are also great and so is "RUSH HOUR 2". Another one I enjoyed is "CHICKEN RUN". I owened the DTS ES version of "Se7en" but it was among the discs that was recently stolen so I have not heard the ES sound on my home theatre sound system. I am eventualy planning to replace this disc. I agree, "GLADIATOR"'s opening battle scene is also awesome and so is the entire movie sound mix.

As Chase and I mentioned in the two above post regarding the sound of "GLADIATOR" in DTS ES on the DVD, I am very sorry to say that the EX presentation I saw at the renently closed Waikiki Twin did not impress me very much as far as hearing sound from the rear speakers. Because the DVD features a true discreet track, the sound coming from the back speakers was very active but the matrix presentation in the theatre was very marginal and does not even come close to the sound on the DVD in my home theatre. If one can get a much better sound mix on a DVD like the GLADIATOR" at home why cant the theatres offer the same or something better?

DTS-ES DVDs pose a confusing situation between the ES-5.1 Matrix and ES-6.1 Discrete formats not being clearly labeled on some DVDs.

For instance, "Chicken Run" has conflicting information. I'm not sure whether that one has a discrete or matrix-derived center surround channel (the label on the back seems to imply "matrix" since the CS channel dot is hollow compared to the solid coloring of all the other channels in the icon).

With many home theater receivers now featuring DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete playback, hopefully that will increase the number of ES 6.1 titles. The format has been available for a couple years and there is still only a few major releases in the format.

Another frustrating thing is that a good number of the DVDs with DTS-ES 6.1 on them are crap ("Rush Hour 2," "Bones" etc.). I didn't like "Blade II" very much, but it does indeed have one of the best DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete audio tracks one can find on DVD. You'll get another good 6.1 track on that four-disc "Fellowship of the Ring" SE.

DVD File just posted a good review for "Stargate: Ultimate Edition" and gave its new DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete track very high marks.

If the studios would get their act together and use the "DTS-ES" term only when it applies to the discrete 6.1 format -- which is what the term was created for in the first place -- then it wouldn't be a problem.

"Chicken Run" is discrete according to a colleague of mine.

Aw man I still have the original dual-side DVD of Seven. I must get the better, single-sided DTS-ES version.

Are both versions of Lord of the Rings that exist on DVD in DTS-ES 6.1, or only the super mega mondo extended edition? When are they gonna release a version with MORE extended footage? You can never have too many copies of the same movie!

If New Line follows the pattern established with FOTR, we will get a "standard" release of Two Towers, followed by the "deluxe" extended release (maybe 2 of them if they do the gift set thing). Same for part 3. At that point, there will be, what, 6 different releases in 9 different packages? BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Then they'll remaster the trilogy and put them together into a SUPER DELUXE PLATINUM BOXED SET EDITION with EVEN MORE bonus footage (total running time: 12 hours, plus another 15 hours of "making of" extras). The boxed set will including a souvenir keepsake, something like a vial of Gollum's phloegm.

Joe,

The original theatrical version of LOTR only contains a Dolby Digital track. To get LOTR in DTS, you have to obtain the 4-disc extended version.

And yes, the remaster of 'Seven' is definitely worth it!

My personal take is that the whole EX/ES thing is excessive for home theatres. It can help spread out the soundfield a little in a movie theatre, and in new installations, well, you may as well have it. But for a home theatre it is very extreme. [Roll Eyes]

Turns out the audio tracks on this DVD are "regular" 5.1, not EX or ES.
