I noticed at the bottom of thread views that it says "Polling is disabled" and also the folder legends say stuff like "A closed topic or poll."

So, what's a poll?

I wanna know.

A poll, or polling, in a forum is were you can ask questions and people can click the answer they think fits the best, so you get a voting for which answer to the question people prefers.
E.g.: Whatīs the best soundformat?
x SRD
x DTS
x SR
x SDDS

And when people vote you can see what people think, or at least what the people who pressed the button thought... Not very stastically accurate, but gives a momentary look at the issue.
Hope this helped. Who to manage it on this forum isnīt quite clear to me (havenīt checked it out) but I bet somenone else knows...

I've seen a lot of "web polls" and they're usually flawed. First of all, the people that choose to participate may be the ones that are more likely to hold a certain opinion. Second, if the poll is not created carefully, the answers may not be mutually exclusive. For example:

Which type of theatre auditorium do you prefer?

1. A THX certified one
2. One with DTS sound
3. One with Dolby Digital sound
4. One with stadium seating
5. One with red decorations and drapes
6. The newer Regal-style auditoriums
7. One that is in a theatre managed by Brad Miller

I've seen many polls on the Web that were almost as bad. The results of this poll would be mostly meaningless. Creaters of such polls often have some hidden agenda that the choices force some people to choose.

This is why we don't use the polling feature. I suppose for kicks we could make some meaningless one for grins, but certainly not for anything too serious. Like was explained above, they are typically flawed, especially if non-members are permitted to vote (the same people will cast their vote over and over).

Weren`t we going to have a vote on who`s stirring the pot the most?
Even though now that Sam Hunter has become a good person and the other nominees Phil H. and Bob M. really are no match for me, the outcome would be pretty predictable.

I agree. What Manny said about Miss Lewinsky was insensitive, offending and entirely undeserved.

I believe you forgot to add Motiograph to the list Scott.

In any case, I don't think we should have any polls until we poll everyone as to whether or not we want to have polls. At that point if the poll is successful we could then start to have polls.

Daryl, you'd need to make it so everybody can only vote once (non-members are not permitted, people without pictures only count as half of a vote, etc...). And only moderators can start polls, otherwise there would be just too damn many of them. Don't worry, the moderators are creative enough to keep the polls good and fun.

I like Scott's list, but wouldn't each need to be their own thread? I've never seen multiple polls in the same thread.

Mike, I am flattered that you referenced me.
Don't worry, I have a lot on my plate right now and I don't need the extra stress associated with instigating. Give me some time and I will be back to my evil ways [evil]
