British film critic and writer, Alexander Walker died today, aged 73. He had been the film critic of the London Evening Standard, which anounced his death in its early editions today, for over forty years.

Sometimes a controversial figure, he was very well known, probably the only critic that most British people would be able to name.

The Standard says that he died at a London clinic, while having tests for cancer.

I know this sounds horrible, but I've never been able to take anything he wrote seriously since my mother (a journalist) told me about an incident during the early '80s when the printers' unions were in the midst of their militant last gasp (i.e. the Murdoch/Wapping dispute). One of their techniques was to introduce typos into the printsetting done on the new equipment accidently/on purpose, to which end Walker's byline in his 'Evening Standard' review of E.T. had the 'l' substituted with an 'n' in his surname (well, the two letters are right next to each other on the keyboard, aren't they?).
