I've noticed that the Address Book in Mac OS X has a group called "Directories" but there's nothing in it. No addresses there. And I can't add any to it.

Further investigation revealed that the Directories group is for LDAP servers.

What's this all about?

It's only for use by the LAPD to catch drug lords.

LDAP=lightweight directory access protocol

It's designed as a way for companies and other organizations to share a "directory" of employees. It can be used as a shared email addressbook, an authentication mechanism (replaces NIS and NT domain logons), and for other uses.

It's probably not useful for an individual user, unless you are very bored. The most common LDAP servers are the Netscape product and OpenLDAP.

Thanks Scott.

I did some searching and came across some actual LDAP directories for a few different universities. It's interesting to know about but I don't have much use for it as an individual user right now.

No thanks to Joe, who is obviously suffering from dyslexia. [Razz]
