"Auditoriums" or "Auditoria" ?

What is the rule that governs the plural form of words ending in "um" ?

Auditoria. It's Latin, obviously (second declension neuter nouns end in -um). Any -um word derived from Latin will have the -a form for the plural. Any -us Latin-derived word will have -i as the plural (e.g. alumnus/alumni); -a will have -ae (e.g. formula/formulae), etc.

Areola? Wasn't that the name of The Little Mermaid? It makes me think of this rock band with an odd name: Titty Bingo.

"Auditoriums" seems okay for normal conversation. I have used the term "auditoria" when I wanted to sound snottily superior.

Latin is dead for a good reason... it sucks ass! It didn't have what it takes to survive.

It's almost always 'auditoria' here. 'Ums' sounds odd somehow, but maybe that's because I'm just not used to hearing it.

Scott, it's about 35 years since I did any Latin. I've long ago forgotten what little I ever knew.

Wow. I never thought of "fora" as being a plural of "forum", but Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary 11th Edition list both as correct. The two plurals of auditorium are also listed in ths edition.
