I am heading to Paris, France next week and was wondering what the "must see" theaters are in the area? Either in terms of presentation or ambiance, etc. Thanks very much for your thoughts! [Smile]

The "Grand Rex" is an absolute highlight. An original 20s movie palace with fountain in the lobby and originally preserved auditorium design. A friend of mine lived and worked in Paris for a year, he knows all the good cinemas. I will see that I can put you in touch with him.

An absolute must-see on any trip to France is a Hollywood film dubbed into French. In the cinema listings in any paper you'll see two sorts of screenings: 'VO', or 'Version originale', meaning that the film is shown in its original language with French subtitles; and 'VF' or 'Version Français', meaning that it's dubbed.

I'll never forget Mel Gibson's repeated cries of 'Sacré merde!' and 'feuck moi!' (the f-word has no direct French equivalent) in L'arme Fatale 3! There was barely any attempt at lip-synching, which made the whole experience even funnier. The last time I saw a film in France was in the mid-90s, when I guess that the two versions would have needed dual print inventories. I suppose it's now done by swapping DTS discs.

Just across the street from the Rex on Boulevard de Poisonnere is the Max Linder Panorama I fell in love with that cinema in 1992 when I saw "My Fair Lady" in 70mm. I´m not sure it´s currently open, but if it is, go see it.

Useful words are
"Projection room" = "Cabine de Projection"
"Projectionist" = "Le projectioniste"
"70mm" = "70mm"

Otherwise check with Silver Screens and DP70 history before you go.

Oddly, the architect of Le Rex in Paris was John Eberson, who mastered & created the most famous "atmospheric" (inside-out) theatres in the 20's here in the US. Le Rex was an odd commission for Paramount (in that it was outside the US), probably his last atmospheric, & there it is standing & operating in Paris when so many of his have been demolished in the US.

There's a page on Le Rex at
http://www.silverscreens.com/rex_en.html
part of the Silver Screens site
http://www.silverscreens.com/index.php
run by a great guy named Denis whom I met & drove up the wall with my junkyard heap of cruddy opera, cajun, & antique colonial French.

In the forum at the Silver Screens site, they have a thread on getting together for a theater crawl. You could post there or e-mail the webmaster that you're on the way over, & you might get a chaperone or two & perhaps an inside tour.

If you go through England, do NOT get the scrambled egg sandwich. It has cucumbers hidden in it.
