What do you think about FT creating a 'Zagat-like' review service where independent reviewers could submit presentation quality reviews of theaters to the FT site?

Each review would be similar to the SMPTE presentation quality evaluation sheet in that it would have numerical ratings for each area (image quality, sound quality, etc.) The theaters with consistently high ratings (verified by checkers? how could you make sure the ratings were true?) could get a 'FT seal of approval' for that year... (they would have to be rechecked to keep the approval.)

(Should the inspectors rate subjectively or should there be objective criteria as well? (ie. 35PA checks by the inspector, lightmeter checks, etc.))

Theaters could use the FT approval mark in promotional material/advertising/etc., to show that they are committed to quality presentation.

Basically, it would be similar to Evan's site (hsvmovies.com) but national in scope and marketed to consumers as an indication of quality.

What do you think? (just throwing the idea out.)

I think I recall this being proposed before (maybe by me [Confused] ) and it was stated that the site really wasn't interested in going that way.

We could however, possibly add a new forum where participants make a post (SilverCity Polo Park [WINNIPEG]) and many presentation reviews can be added.. Just an easier alternative... but I don't think the time and efoort would be worth it.

Doug,

While your intentions may be honorable and in good nature, I think I would have asked Brad what HE felt about anyone using what is bascially HIS namesake being tied to anything.

Ultimately, while I see the possibilties, I think it would fall along the wayside, like TAP has. It takes money to implement something like this. Money damn near ALL the majors will NOT kick out or help support becuase they have someone number crunching that has NO CLUE as to the *real* nature of our industry. (Hint to anyone like this - we're NOT in the concession business, that is simply gravy for our MEAT)

In a nutshell, I see it as a catch 22 that will not work given the state of our industry today. [Frown]

If you want to review threatres, do it here (Film Handler's Movie Reviews).

For an example just take a look at any of David Stambaugh's posts.

Other than that, that's not what this site is about.
