I'm looking up subjects on the Burning Man festival & I came up with something on the Black Rock City,Nevada festival site which mentioned that it or the areas around it has a drive in. Is this true? if so, is the theatre a temporary or permanant theatre?
I am thinking a non-drive in outdoor 35 setup using an enclosed projection tent with plywood flooring desinged to prevent or minimize film & equipment exposure to sand & dust from the dust storms that occur during the festival equipped with a platter
& also have the tent built to keep winds from wreaking havoc with it. Also use clear plastic for the port windows.I would have the platter & other equipment mounted on wheel dolloies. I think window screen material or lightweight fabric would keep the sand & dust out of the speakers. Shop vacuums & film cleaning gear not optional.

I don't know how well a tent would protect the equipment during a dust storm, Matthew. Spend all the time you want using duct tape to seal up your tent but one good gust and the whole thing could fly off its stakes leaving you naked to the wind.

I was involved in an outdoor concert last July 4th. We had an outdoor stage (approx 25' X 25') with a canopy set up on the football field. The canopy was supported by tubular steel (alloy?) box trusses.

Now, here in Pennsylvania we don't have many wind storms like they do out West. It was a perfectly calm, sunny day. All of a sudden a good 30 MPH+ gust of wind came out of nowhere. The canopy raised up about 2 feet and suddenly slammed down again. THREE of the box trusses collapsed under the strain! It was only a couple hours before the concert and we had to scramble to tear down the crumpled remains of the canopy before the show started!

Out there in Texas and "points West" I can only imagine the kind of winds you get. It's a sure bet that if my whimpy-ass Pennsylvania gust of wind can tear down my canopy your wind and dust storms will take a tent and tear it to shreds in a matter of seconds!

The ONLY kind of building I would even consider using as an outdoor booth in those conditions would be a cement block bunker with double doors to form an airlock and triple filtered air vents.

Randy--
You're just not whistling dexie! The dust devils out here in
the desert is something you just DON'T play around with. They
can be and are deadly. I concure, go with cement block and
when the wind is gone the block will still be where you put
it.

An out door venue has been set up here using a "portahut" for the projection room. This is a transportable structure about the size of a shipping container. They are used for staff on building sites and companies over here specialize in hire, delivery and pick up, rather like jumbo rubbish bins. They are insulated and air conditioned. You may have something similar available.

Why not just dump an enclosure on the back of a pick-up truck?
