(Preface: I live in Oklahoma, but the story ain't about me. I don't think I've slept with a tenth that many women in my life!)

Today, a fourth person working in the porn industry tested positive for HIV (a transexual performer not involved with the other three actors who tested positive). While the national press seems fixated on that story, here's an item sure to scare anyone living in/near Oklahoma:

Oklahoman May Have Infected Nearly 170 Women With HIV
KOCO-TV Oklahoma City

Authorities in the state of Washington say an Oklahoma man may have infected up to 170 people with HIV.

Anthony Whitfield is charged with 12 counts of sexual assault in addition to charges of witness tampering and violating no-contact orders. He pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.

Eyewitness News 5 first reported on Whitfield in March after Oklahoma health officials said that he might have infected women in the Oklahoma City area. Officials confirmed that Whitfield returned to Oklahoma as recently as 2003 -- after he was diagnosed with HIV.

Washington authorities claim he intentionally spread HIV in that state.

Nearly half of the staff at the Thurston County, Wash., health department is working on cases involving Whitfield, according to Seattle's KOMO-TV. Four Washington women who had sex with Whitfield have tested positive for HIV. However, the number of potential victims has risen from 12 to 170 within the last month. Forty-five women either refused to be tested or have not been located, health officials said.

The Washington total accounts for women who had sex with Whitfield, as well as those who may have been exposed and transmitted the disease to others. The number does not include potential victims in Oklahoma.

A woman who had a relationship Whitfield when he lived in Washington said he often talked his way into the lives of women who would give him sex, money and affection.

"There was just something about him ... that he had the ability to make you feel that you were really special and beautiful, and you were the only woman in the world to him," she said.

An Oklahoma City woman told Eyewitness News 5 a similar story in March.

The woman, who declined to identify herself, filed a police report in 1996 when she learned that Whitfield might have been HIV positive. However, Oklahoma City police did not question Whitfield.

According to the Oklahoma State Department of Health, five Oklahoma women have come forward to say they had sexual contact with Whitfield.

The ladies talk about the fellow "having something about him...that ability to make you feel special." Har har. Bullshit. I've heard that lie many times before. They need to just say the guy was great looking and one hell of a lay! Most men aren't too self conscious to admit being attracted to women purely by superficial basis.

I'm only complaining about that because guys like me have to win women over with personality, talent, conversation, etc. Personality alone is not going to allow a guy to infect 170 women with HIV, much less even get laid more than a handful of times per year.

Men and women both need to stop the bullshit. If you're really going to sleep with someone because they're smart, or just have a really nice personality than do it with someone with those traits. If you only get it on with great looking people, do it but don't lie about it.

And I think this news story should underscore the mortal hazards of choosing companions only on sex appeal. I'm going to start hitting on some bookworm chicks at the library so I don't get killed. You ladies out there better start hitting it with some nerds!

Anthony Whitfield is charged with 12 counts of sexual assault...
If the sex was consensual, he would have a pretty sound defence against that, I'd have thought. If the Washington authorities think they can prove their belief that he deliberately had unprotected sex, knowing that he was HIV positive, then he should be facing a charge of manslaughter as soon as his first partner dies. Again, murder would be difficult to prove, because presumably his motive was sexual gratification, not the intent to kill.

I guess he must have done some sort of plea bargain to avoid a murder or manslaughter rap, hence the guilty plea to sexual assault and the other charges.
