A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Oslo is raising concerns after it found that teenagers who use mobile phones are more likely to have had sex.

According to The Mirror, the researchers, who questioned more than 10,000 youngsters between the age-group of 13-18, found that 60 per cent of teenagers who use mobiles a lot had sex, whereas, only nine per cent of the children who seldom or never used mobile phones had had sex.

Researchers also found that children with mobile phones often started having sex at the young age of 13. They are attributing this disturbing behavior to the fact that children often flirt on SMS and can also make "speedy contact" with their phones.

"The use of mobile phones is directly responsible for the early sexual encounters directly, they are as harmful as porn sites and adult magazines," said Professor Willy Pederson. (ANI)

Damn, my phone must not work too well, then. Usually when I'm using it to take pictures of girls I get slapped, but not in the good way.
Maybe I have the wrong service plan..Stay away from T-Mobile, I guess.

Where the hell are the parents? I know that this has been discussed before, but parents need to monitor their kid’s behavior and maybe they wouldn’t be grandparents when there own kids are only 14!

If phones are, I would say that school, cars, malls & parks are directly responsible for children having sex.

So I guess that we just need to get rid of TV, movies, cells, schools, AIM, pens & paper, & vacationing so "sexual encounters" can be eliminated! [Wink]

But using cell phones is supposed to decrease your sperm count so shouldn't this lead to a corresponding decrease in teenage pregnancies [Wink] [Confused]

"The use of mobile phones is directly responsible for the early sexual encounters..."

Obviously fallacious logic: "Begging the question".

Simply because two phenomenon occur together, one can NOT infer that one is the cause of the other. There is a statistical link but there is no CAUSAL link.

How do we know that it's not the other way around?!

Could it REALLY be that teenagers who start having sex when they are younger are more likely to have a cellular phone?! The research does not address the question nor does the article state that anybody has done anything more than take a servey of teenagers who have cellular phones.

Yes, I agree that, as a whole, teenagers seem to be having sex at a younger and younger age all of the time. However, some things need to be considered:

* How did the researchers define "Sex"? Think about it... "Sex" to a teenager could be anything from simply kissing to full-on intercourse. They don't seem to have tried to make such a distinction.

* Did the researchers make any attempt to verify the teenagers' claims to have had sex? How many people (teenagers or adults) do you know who would lie when asked if they had sex? How many people (teenagers or adults) would lie on a servey if the servey was anonymous? Anonymous serveys are more likely to have false answers, no matter what the question.

* Did the researchers filter for demographics? Are teenagers from poor, urban areas more likely to have had sex at a young age? What about race or economic standing?

This article sounds like a crock of crap to me!

Given that the source of these claims is a Professor Willy, should not the article be dated 1 April?

The main problem with this claim is that they do not show it in comparison to 10 years ago or so when cell phones were uncommon. Could it be that the same percentage of kids have always had sex but they just have cell phones now. Obviously the other 9% are not cool enough to get laid so they dont need a cell phone.

...either that or the 9% are too sensible to have either underage sex or a mobile 'phone. [Roll Eyes]

I love the way most everybody replied with these over-analytical and detailed fact finding responses and questions. LOL.

The bottom line is talky chatty people are more promiscuous, and usually the center of attention in a lot of social groups. The introverted, independent, and shy ones stay at home...alone.
