I hope this doesn't piss anyone off. I'm drunk and I've decided that this is the thread to post on when you're drunk. So if you're drunk, post here.

OK, I've sobered up now, and in retrospect: I immediately regret that decision.

Oh well, if anyone has a problem with it, I'll delete this thread. But if I'm ever drunk again and I happen to have access to a computer, rest assured that I will ONLY post in this particular thread.

In the USA, each state sets the "legal" drinking age. 21 seems to be the most common. You cannot sell or provide alcohol to minors. AFAIK, taking wine at church communion, or parents following family tradition (e.g., wine at meals) with their responsible children would be allowed. But parents providing alcohol at an underage party could be prosecuted.

Illinois used to be 19 for beer and wine (as though these were less likely to lead to DWI etc. Quite the opposite of course). The City of Urbana (home to the University of Illinois) and perhaps other towns used their home rule power to set it at 18 (probably so that there wouldn't need to be a division between students). I recall a newspaper article about some kids being busted at a Champaign bar for underage drinking and one girl whining about how unfair it was since she would not have been arrested had she been drinking only a block or two further east. Well...DUH!

Since then the state raised it to 21 and no home rule overrides. I believe a federal law mandates 21 if the state is to receive federal highway or other monies. I doubt any states have anything lower than 21 now.

Are 18, 19, and 20 year olds more likely to abuse than say, 24, 25, 26 year olds or 40, 41 and 42?

That's a good question. If a kid is smart, it should only take getting sick one good time to know better than to drink in excess. Obviously at that age, folks are more impressionable. However, in later years, I think addiction is more likely as a result of personal failure and depression.

I think Steve is correct in that all states now have a minimum age of 21. The states were strong armed into adopting that age by the federal level in that if they didn't have that minimum age the would receive no federal highway money.

If I remember correctly Louisiana was the last state to adopt the 21 minimum age requirement.

The US principle would appear to be a bit different from our law. Here, the legal age for buying alcohol is 18 (as it is in most Western European countries). Below that age it is an offence to attempt to buy it. It is also an offence to sell booze to an under-18. But an adult providing alcohol to someone under 18 (e.g. allowing their teenage offspring to have a couple of glasses of wine with dinner) is no problem. Of course, if they allow said offspring to get pissed as a newt, cause problems as a result thereof and/or suffer alcohol poisoning, then they can be done for child abuse, public order offences or whatever. But simply providing alcohol to someone who is below the legal age for buying it themselves is not a crime.

P.S. I'm now on my second G & T of the evening (which, given that I'm driving first thing tomorrow, will be my last), but wouldn't describe that as 'drunk'!

Wisconsin is lobbying for lowering the age, I hear, and bypassing the federal highway money or whatever.
They already have 5 of the 10 highest bars per capita in the country (My school, Eau Claire, being the #1 in the world, I hear). It also helps that they have a brewery withing 20 miles of every major college in the state.

Also, people are allowed to drink at bars as long as their parents are present. I'm not sure if there is an age restriction for that (I would think 18-19 but not sure). I know a couple kids from school whose parents took them to Water St for their 20th birthdays.
Hmm..Wisconsinites drinking..imagine that.

A friend and I went to Iowa to visit his sister on Halloween and you only have to be 19 to get into bars there.

But otherwise I believe every state is 21 now.

Steve, the younger a person is, the more likely they will be under the impression that drinking makes them cool. I mean, just look at Richard!
