Well Joe does scare me because he's the first person in more than ten years to have spotted my letter in a magazine.

Think about it... An 11-year-old video game magazine and Joe not only has it, but recently read it!

Next thing you know, he'll discover my snowboard in SSX3!

SSX3 pisses me off because it is supposed to be in DTS 5.1, but it only plays in DTS 4.0. Apparently the PS2 is not powerful enough for anything more than 4.0. Pro Logic is better. I have no intention of booting that game up ever again. Also I have ways to obtain information about anybody!

Heh! I also made note of the 4.0 surround back when Tricky was released, but then again maybe that was another thing you read from me.

The PS2 can do 5.1, it's just that game companies see no need to spend the extra cash on it when 99.9% of the players are indifferent to the extra channels.

Anyway, if you ever play through with Mac in SSX3, the board I designed is his "Galaxy" board. It's randomly awarded at some point in the game, but you'll always get it if you get enough gold medals.

That must be why 85% of Xbox games are in full 5.1.

Hmm that's odd, seeing as how my X-box doesn't seem to have a digital output. Without a digital audio output, the best you can do is analog dolby surround (which is in reality 2-channel stereo).

Edit:

I did some research and found you have to buy a special cable that uses Toslink to "unlock" 5.1 audio. That's... incredibly lame and a rip-off. With the PS2, you just use any standard fiber-optic sound cable.

As for the 85% figure on xbox games, that's news to me. I look at how many games use digital surround on the PS2 and it's a significantly smaller percentage...

Click
Here
or
here

Clicking on either of those links will enable you to see what you need to get Dolby Digital from your Xbox games. Notice on the back of many Xbox games that it even says "In game Dolby Digital". PS2 can only do Dolby Digital during FMV (full motion video) playback, and cannot generate it on the fly like the Xbox can.

Response to your edit:
You have to buy new cables just to get S-video from the PS2, how is this any different?
Also this list will show you how many Xbox games are in 5.1. It is far from complete, but you'll get the idea.
