For my "money" job, I am flying over today (12/10/04) to Glasgow. Don't know if I would have a chance to meet anyone or see the sites, but anything of interest would be good to know.

Thanks

The Glasgow Film Theatre is worth a look, and the Scottish Screen Archive also has its offices there.

As Thomas mentions, the National Museum of Film, Photography and Television, complete with Cinerama and Imax theatres, is situated in Bradford, which is about a 2 1/2 hour train ride from Glasgow (easily doable as a day trip). The easiest way to get there is probably a GNER train from Glasgow Central station to Bradford Interchange, changing at either York or Leeds. Should you happen to stop by in York, you'll probably find Darren or Yours Truly in the City Screen bar!

I don't think I want to know. At the risk of off-pissing all the Scots on this forum, I'm afraid that Glasgow would come way down my list of 'must see' places in the UK. I went there once for a conference, and on the Saturday evening one of the delegates who had once lived there insisted that we go to what had become a very rough pub behind Sauchiehall St. We found out the hard way that the place had changed hands since he'd left, and that strangers were most definitely not welcome - espeically strangers with English accents! As a result I ended up spending most of that night in a hospital casualty department waiting room while one of my colleagues was being stitched up after a fight, followed by a trip to the police station to give a statement. The only time I've been back since was heading to the airport, which is about as much of Glasgow as I ever want to see again.

Leo, I wholeheartedly agree!

Edinburgh on the other hand is worth a visit.

Agreed too! I've been to two or three Edinburgh film festivals, and very pleasant weekends they were too. If Edinburgh is anything like York then December is probably quite a clever time to visit, because (i) most of the touristy things are open all the year round, (ii) the place will be cheaper to stay in and less crowded, and (iii) a lot of the things to do are indoor anyway, so even if you don't get lucky with the weather it won't be a disaster.

Edinburgh is currently overrun with chrismas shopping, however most of the normal tourist attractions are running normally.

There is also chistmas events running in Edinburgh (see http://www.capitalchristmas.co.uk/ for more details) and elsewhere ( http://www.visitscotland.com/ )

If you want to go cinema spotting the best guide I know of is at http://www.chem.gla.ac.uk/~gbarr/cinemas/
