Just came down over the fax machine that Screenvision wants the 30 and 120 second American Express "Laird Hamilton" trailers pulled because of the disaster out in the Indian Ocean. All trailers should be pulled by Friday, December 29. Once your theatre has done so, the termination notice should be refaxed to Screenvision's office in New York at (212) 497-0500.

I can't say that I particularly disagree with their decision, but I wonder if American Express will get a refund on their advertising costs? Its only for one week, but AMEX uses the Screenvision network fairly often. I'd hope they would'nt want to upset a regular customer even though I think the trailers are utter crap (especially the ones' taken directly from television advertising).

Steve,

There are several clips showing Laird Hamilton surfing some very big waves.

Sounds like a bit of a stretch to me.

Sure. Be sensitive to those who have been through a tragedy but this is a bit on the extreme side, if you ask me. Then, again, there's probably somebody out there who'll whine about it if you don't pull them down!

What's next? Pulling down the signs advertising bottled water?

When that Coca-Cola Project Greenlight short was on-screen (the one with the Mafia-run Theatre) someone complained at my company and we had to pull them by the end of the day on all prints....

Yeah I got this notice the other day. Oh well, as long I'm putting on the new coke ads it won't be much trouble to rip these out.

Oh crap! Does this mean they're going to pull Life Aquatic too?!?!

I hope not... still want to see that before they edit out all the ocean scenes.

I also think this is taking it a bit too far, When I saw this ad I did not think of an Island Indian Ocean, I thought of Hawaii.

It happens,

After 9-11, one Clear Channel employee, I think he was a station manager, posted a list of songs that he believed should be pulled from air. Third Eye Blind's "Jumper" was one of them. [Roll Eyes]

It just shows the lengths people will go to ensure everybody's fuzzy happiness.

Actually, there was a list of I think 150 or so songs that was compiled by many of Clear Channel's program directors that they sent out only as a precaution because they thought that some people might not feel easy hearing at the time.
That doesn't necceccarily mean that they themselves thought that the songs should be pulled.
May people thought that the list of songs was sent out as a memo from Clear Channel's corporate office and that they were told that it was mandatory that the songs be removed from playlists.
That turned out to be untrue and any decisions to pull songs pulled from playlists were made at the local level.

Maybe they'll have to recall the new 100th issue / 25th Anniversary issue of Cinefex (the special effects magazine) whose interviews with the major people in the business starts with this comment about the change to digital by John Van Vliet:

"I don't call it a digital revolution. I call it a digital tsunami. It came in, sucked everyone out to sea, and then the survivors washed back up."

How's that for prescient wording?

The pull of the amex ad from screenvision was at the request from amex themselves. Amex does incredible business in that region, as well as they have a center there that deals with most of the non us business. They wanted to appear sensitive to those in that region, so they pulled this part of thier campaign until a later date.

As for if amex is going to get a refund, i doubt it. Amex plans to run the same ad campaign after it all dies down. It is all part of the MY LIFE MY CARD promotion. They will shift from the surfer to another person.

Ciao mon

Didn't the same thing happen with the Spider-Man trailer? I vaguely remember that being shown in September 2001, and it getting pulled because there was a shot at the end of Spidey stringing a web between the twin towers...

Swordfish was pulled from us a day or two after 9-11… but I guess there was more of a connection there.

To show respect for the victims of the tragedy in South Aisia, Cartoon Network has cancelled the run of their popular "TOONAMI" series of cartoons. No decision has been finalized yet, but the cartoon block may return under the new name of "TOONICANE" in early 2005.
