You should look at this site. A Russian DJ modified a pair of cassette decks for use as his ideal pair of 'turntables'.
He basically took a pair of tape decks ,added some controls & homebrew circuits to them & housed them in homemade wood enclosures. http://www.soundresearch.narod.ru/engcassettedj.htm
For a related idea of mine how about projector &/or film turntablism? Take some moviolas,or soundheads or projectors such as 8,16,35 or 70 mm & modify them for example use a variable speed reversible motor. Some ideal function & featues for example would be forward/reverse jog dial,+/- 25 % pitch,+/- 8 % pitch,& +/- 7 % pitch.

If I were you I would consider getting a studio machine (if it really MUST be a projector) - they are generally equipped with forward/backward movements as well as variable speeds (and maybe some other features).

BTW: The idea of having cassette decks for DJ'ing doesn't seem to be very practical, especially at live DJ performances.

For DJ'ing I prefer a pair of 12" decks or the computer software "Traktor DJ Studio".

Seconded.
Though I did do something similar once with an old portable reel to reel unit I found.
