Stephen Furley Film God Posts: 3059 From: Coulsdon, Croydon, England Registered: May 2002 posted 09-24-2005 03:49 AM                     I was having a look at google Earth, and I can see what looks like the remains of an old airport. The area is marked an 'Barren Island', though it now seems to be joined to the mainland (if you can use that term for any of NYC except maybe the Bronx). It's near the North West end of the Marine Parkway Bridge, South West of Jamaica Bay and JFK. Is, or was, this an airport? What was it used for; it looks to big for small private planes, military maybe?  |  IP: Logged James Bjarnason Film Handler Posts: 6 From: Victoria, BC, Canada Registered: Jun 2005 posted 09-24-2005 04:55 AM                     It appears to be the Floyd Bennett Field built in 1929. Before that it was operated as the Barren Island Airport through the 20's. It was a military air field and has been used by the US Coast Guard as well as the NYPD Aviation Unit. It was deactivated in 1971 and is now under the control of the National Parks Service. Current uses are a training center for Emergency Services, NYPD Police Academy Driving School, Job Corp Training center, Armed Forces Reserve Office, and other stuff.  |  IP: Logged German Marin Expert Film Handler Posts: 227 From: Verbania (VB), Italy Registered: Jul 2001 posted 09-25-2005 02:45 AM                     It's an old airport.
