I entered the default BMI (I don't know my weight in pounds, only kilos: I think I'm probably slightly above the ideal BMI, but not by much), 'average' optimism/pessimism rating, that I'm a non-smoker (true), and my birth date of 18 June 1973. By crunching that data, this website thinks I'll live to be 74 - but why it thinks I'll die just over three months short of my 75th birthday I don't know - why not make it a nice round number and call it 18 June 2047? I read somewhere that the life expectancy for a typical British male is now 76, so maybe that site's a bit pessimistic. However, mean averages are a very blunt instrument. From all the other life expectancy crap I read in the papers, the following factors might also have something to do with it. I'm not married, have a history of heart disease on both sides of my family and drink probably 20-30% more than the recommended weekly alcohol intake for a male, which all reduce life expectancy; but on the other hand I have a low fat diet (mainly the result of my allergy to dairy fat - i.e. I can't eat anything with milk, butter, eggs or cheese in it) and don't (and have never) smoke(d). So really, you can crunch statistics to produce a 'headline grabbing' one such as is generated by this site. In a way, sites like this are a good way of getting you to think about how statistics are generated and what they really mean. But the optimist in me prefers to hope that, in this case, I'll end up being an exception which proves all those scary rules!  |  IP: Logged
