Boeing 747 tankers:

The Evergreen Supertanker tour was a great success in all locations. The aircraft was on-time at every airport and the 20,000 gallon dispersing system worked perfectly every time.

We want to sincerely thank everyone involved in the tour, including all attendees and all of the media who gave the Evergreen Supertanker positive and exciting coverage. Your support is greatly appreciated.

We look forward to putting the Evergreen Supertanker to work this summer saving lives and resources!

Evergreen Supertanker Services, Inc.

Evergreen also runs the Evergreen Aviation Air Museum, where Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" now resides:

construction of a new facility that will house one of the
largest IMAX® movie screens in the Pacific Northwest.
On Highway 18, one hour southwest of Portland, this
major entertainment attraction is to be located next to the
world-famous Evergreen Aviation Museum. The theater
design will mirror the Museum with a 80 feet glass façade
and soaring entrance lobby.

It was disassembled and barged from Long Beach, CA to McMinnville, OR back in the mid-90's. I drove up there and saw it sitting wingless under a tarp in June '97, before they built a place to display it. Now it's all back together and out of the elements.

Yea, Evergreen is the only one building any new firefighting tankers that amount to very much. Almost all of the planes owned by Hawkins And Powers have been gounded since the wings fell off their tanker in Calif. Sadly, no airplane manufacturer is designing or building any type of large tanker for fighting forest fires.... Ther are a few small ones but nothing of the type needed. Converted 747's are certainly the way to go with this.

I toured the Spruce Goose (Hercules) when it was displayed in Long Beach and it is a big must for any aviation enthusiast to see. They way it was originally presented there was mind blowing... with a film being shown about the making of it and then at the end of the film the wall opened up revealing the plane. Talk about goosebumps... peoples jaws dropped to the floor! Having gone through it only reinforces what a great visionary and genuis that Howard Hughes really was!!

Is the Supertanker a new airframe or is it a reuse of retired 747's? Louis

It's an older one, ship no. 20653/237, a -273C series.

According to listings and old pictures at airliners.net over the years since it was delivered new to World Airways in May 1974 it's been flown by Korean, Braniff, Viasa, Lufthansa, American, possibly Northwest, Flying Tigers, FedEx, Southern Air Transport, and Evergreen International.
