[I originally posted something similar to this in the "What is the latest theatre to open or close" thread, but now feel that was an inappropriate place for the post.]

Curious what you think about an 1,100-seat single-screener still in operation but with rumors of a demolition? Should the NATIONAL Theatre, located in the Westwood Village community of Los Angeles, stay or should it go? The NATIONAL has a ton of history behind it (including hosting dozens of premieres and exclusive engagements and always being state-of-the-art), but given the megaplex and convenience mindset, what value today does a large, single-screen theatre have?

Not sure how much good it'll do, but there's an online petition designed to convince the powers that be to reconsider demolishing the theatre.

And, finally, I'd also like to post a list of the NATIONAL's exhibition history since its days appear to be numbered and once it's gone all that will be left will be memories. For those of you familiar with the theatre, the list might offer a bit of nostalgia or may help you recall which films you saw there. For those who've never been to Los Angeles or never set foot in the venue, the list may remind you of a venue in another city with similar design, features or booking history. Enjoy!

Michael,
Once again thanks for the great amount of research that went into this. I have seen about 5 movies at the National and its my favorite type of theatre. I hope it stays since there are so few left. I have signed the petition and will urge others to do the same.
Brian

Just signed it. Thanks for the work of listing all films which played there.

By the way, on my trip to California in october 1998, I had signed the petition at the Cinerama Dome for identical purpose. Now, it was restored and integrated to that new multiplex, but do you know if the petition had any kind of influence on this, and which corporate executive actually considered it ?

Well the company that operates Pacific Theatres is a very wealth company. Pacific Theatres alway wanted to put the land around the Dome to better use. The one thing that Pacific has going for it was they own all the property around the Dome and a many parts of Hollywood Blvd.. Mann Theatres never owned the property the National Theatre sits on. Just like they do not own the Village and Bruin Theatres near by. Because of parking vs. seats zoning in the Westwood area. You have to have so many spaces to seats. So that why there has not been any new theatres built in Westwood area since the 70's. A few of them have been remodeled over the years. Since Mann Theatres closed the Plaza Theatre and Westwood Quad over the last few years. And they were on a wait and see on the National's lease. But the owners of the property want more on the new lease than what Mann wants to pay now. Mann Theatres went through this about 15 years ago with the leases on the Village & Bruin. At that time the were asking over a million a year plus part of the action on the take. Mann Theatres wants to use the seating capacities from the closed Plaza, Westwood Quad and maybe the National for a newer move-over plex nearby the Village and Bruin. I worked for Mann for a time in Los Angeles. I got to work the National many times and it was a great single screen to run.
The petition has been out for a few weeks now and it only has 68 total signatures as of today. The people that have reopened the theatre now tried to do midnight shows like the Plaza and former Odeon Theatres in Westwood did, but have gotten poor attendance for the few shows that they have had. So they cancelled the midnights. There was alot of talk that the National was closing soon and we have to save it. But if you read the comments on that petition. Nothing leaves a great impact on why we have to save this theatre. The fate of the National Theatre may already be sealed.

FYI: The petition is now up to 75 signatures. Looks like the theatre might be closing for the last time very soon.

Just signed. Does Banana Republic own the property? Leasing a building? What. Hate to say it but the contracts have probably already been signed and none of the parties could back out if they wanted to without some significant consequences. Is it architecturally significant or a draped box famous because of its size for the time and what has been through it.

Its whats called a filler. The film before it did not have the legs to hold-over for that fourth week. Their next major film booked was "The Last of Shelia" from Warner Bros.. So they booked a double feature filler for the house, at the time it may have been a move-over of two films that had opened in the area earlier. National General Theatres did this many times with their theatres, when a film had no legs after their contract terms were met.

Oh...
I just thought the odd paring of Billy Jack and a Woody Allen comedy was a rather amusing.
Billy Jack did have legs for about 2 years, as I recall. National General booked it second run at the Fox, where it stayed and stayed and stayed...
I got the impression that National General was a well run company, until it got bought out...I know before, it was known as Fox Theatres, originally a unit of 20th Century Fox before the divestiture in the 50's.

It was a well run company, but they wanted to get into production. It was still part of the Fox empire after the 50's, in one form or another. They made another company up and the same people that were the execs ran it. The president of the National Theatres was brother to the president of the studio, which also ran another theatre chain on the East coast area.

Looks like Michael Coate will have to add "Feast of Love" as the last feature to the list above. Someone reported that the National Theatre quietly closed last Sunday Oct. 7th. 2007.
