According to a report from the Associated Press, Beowulf did pretty well in its opening weekend, particularly the screens showing the movie in 3D.
Beowulf earned an estimated $28.1 million on its opening weekend. Over $8 million of the haul came from 638 screens showing the movie in RealD. $3.6 million came from 84 screens showing the movie in IMAX 3D. Paramount General Sales Manager Don Harris said, "twenty percent of the screens produced forty percent of the gross." In the same report, Paul Dergarabedian, President of Media by Numbers, a box-office tracking company, stated, "If this isn't a mandate on the popularity and viability of 3-D, I don't know what is."
It's still going to take some time for Hollywood to gear up to providing a steady supply of 3D content for movie screens in "digital" or IMAX format. I know of only 3 features currently slated for release in 3D during 2008, U23D, Coraline and Journey to the Center of the Earth.
I'm hoping there may be some push for features to be filmed entirely in IMAX-3D format. The next Batman movie, The Dark Knight will at least have certain segments lensed in native IMAX 15/70 format. Don't know about any 3D for that movie.
I also think it would be cool for Hollywood studios to go back and re-master older movies originally shot for 3D. The horror movie genre is an obvious perfect fit for 3D, whether it's a new project or a reissue of an older film like Friday the 13th Part III in 3D.
Once the Spring and Summer of 2009 arrives, the 3D trend should be in full swing with major projects like James Cameron's Avatar and the Dreamworks/PDI animated movie Monsters vs. Aliens hitting theaters.
