Hollywood's honorary mayor Johnny Grant, best-known for unveiling stars on Tinseltown's Walk of Fame, has died aged 84, city officials said.

A cause of death was not immediately available.

Grant was most often seen at ceremonies on The Walk of Fame, the stretch of Hollywood Boulevard decorated with stars bearing the name of celebrities.

“Johnny Grant was Hollywood's greatest star,” city councilor Eric Garcetti said. “He brought Hollywood the industry and Hollywood the neighborhood together.”

Grant began his career as a broadcast journalist in 1939 before serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He is also believed to have made more overseas trips to perform for US troops - 60 - than any other entertainer, a tally which included 15 trips to Korea and 14 visits to Vietnam. His most recent came last month for soldiers based in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

He was well known around here. He did many good things for Hollywood including producing our annual Christmas Parade.

He never married and has no children but many friends. Many people that never met him feel as though they have known him, he was that kind of person. He will be missed.

He passed away in his sleep in his penthouse suite in the Roosevelt Hotel.

Sorry, but it appears...

Hmmm. The article doesn't mention a certain sound system designer who resides in a certain city in Massachusetts, does it? [Wink]

(The trick to get around the filter is to locate the offending word or phrase and then delete it or alter its spelling. Essentially, you must figure out a way to outsmart the computer. [evil] Ever wonder why on some of my playdate listings that a certain Massachusetts city name always appears misspelled?!)

Yes, I know. I was unable to do that, since it was the URL itself that was giving the error.

Phil's right... I do feel like I knew Johnny Grant. He always looked like he was having so much fun with the Walk of Fame ceremonies. He was a good ambassador. [thumbsup]
