Purely unscientific survey...

What movies celebrating this year a 10th-50th anniversary do you believe deserve to be feted with extra attention such as a theatrical re-release, a DVD Special Edition or a retrospective journalism piece? Just curious because I may be involved with a couple of such projects.

For myself, the following come to mind. I'm curious what your picks might be.

10th (1998)
Saving Private Ryan

15th (1993)
Jurassic Park
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Schindler's List

20th (1988)
Bull Durham
Die Hard
A Fish Called Wanda
Rain Man
Tucker: The Man And His Dream
Who Framed Roger Rabbit

25th (1983)
A Christmas Story
Fanny And Alexander
Flashdance
Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life
National Lampoon's Vacation

The Deer Hunter
Grease

Superman

35th (1973)
American Graffiti
Day For Night (La Nuit Americaine)
The Exorcist
Paper Moon
The Sting

40th (1968)
2001: A Space Odyssey
Bullitt
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Funny Girl
Oliver!
Planet Of The Apes
The Producers

45th (1963)
8½ (Otto e Mezzo)
The Birds
Cleopatra
From Russia With Love
Hud
It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World

10th (1998)
Saving Private Ryan - Needs a Blu-Ray release to commemorate. Perhaps an "extra body parts" edition or something would be nice.

15th (1993)
The Nightmare Before Christmas - Needs a Blu-Ray release in the worst way as the DVD is just gawdawful.

DIE HARD and THE BIG LEBOWSKI are the two that come to mind as most worthy. But thinking outside of the box, I'd love to see the theatrical cut of John McNaughton's WILD THINGS on BD, and John Carpenter's VAMPIRES is in need of a special edition.

Semi-realistically though, how about THE X-FILES? The new movie even comes out this summer.

1958 is the 50th Anniversary of the greatest drive-in picture of all time...... THUNDER ROAD with Robert Mitchum.

Its time for a serious DVD set of this title.

Going back past 50 years...

100th (1908)
Formation of the Motion Picture Patents Company

90th (1918)
Ingmar Bergman born
Hearts of the World

80th (1928)
Lights of New York - generally considered to be Hollywood's first 'all talking' (i.e. the plot is all communicated through recorded dialogue - no intertitles) feature.
Several iconic Hollywood late silents, notably: The Wind and The Crowd.
La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc - not exactly popcorn-munching light entertainment, but deserves a mention on account of its critical impact, I guess.
1928 was a pretty dire year for British film, but Underground is a little-known masterpiece, IMHO.

75 Years (1933)
King Kong
42nd Street
Gold Diggers of 1933
Queen Christina
Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse - Fritz Lang's last film in Germany before moving to Hollywood.

70 Years (1938)
Jezebel
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Alexander Nevsky
Death of Florence 'The Vitagraph Girl' Lawrence, generally considered to be the first film star in the modern sense of the term.

65 Years (1943)
Casablanca
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Münchhausen
Death of Leslie Howard (in action)

60 Years (1948)
Bicycle Thieves
The Red Shoes
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Rope - Hitchcock's first film in colour
Death of D.W. Griffith

55 Years (1953)
CinemaScope (release of The Robe)
The Big Heat
Le Salaire de la peur

(...as an old 60 sec ad clip said that we were playing during that time - "Movies are Great in 'Seventy-Eight!")

A Paramount Summer:

"Heaven can Wait"
"Foul Play"
"Grease" - Highest grossing film for 1978

Universal with:

"Nat'l Lampoon's Animal House"
"Jaw'd 2"
"Deer Hunter" - best pict oscar

Fox with:

"Boys of Brazil"
"Magic"

Columbia with "the Buddy Holly Story"

Warner introducing Christopher Reeve as "Superman"

..but some 'doozies' hit the list....

"Attack of the Killer Tomatoes"
"the Swarm"
"Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke"

and finally - John Carpenter's "Halloween"
