A certain computer dumbass would like to hookup his laptop with a SPDIF outlet to a 5.1 analog amp system with RCA connections.

Is there such a conversion/interface device?

The laptop has a puny built-in stereo amp, that just doesn't cut it.

In the past, I've used a PCMCIA Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook card...but it died and was a PITA to use.

Methinks he'd need a digital to analog converter. Can be pricy since most of those I found on google are focusing on people doing recordings.

If the SPDIF connection is carrying a 5.1 signal, then it's AC3 (aka Dolby Digital) encoded, and you will need an AC3 decoder/surround processor. These are hard to find at reasonable prices outside of the ones built into surround receivers.
