If you were a monster movie fan growing up in the 1960s, THE magazine that you had to have was Ackerman’s “Famous Monsters of Filmland”. Whenever I was ill as a child, my wonderful mother used to drive down to our local newsstand to buy me the latest issue of FMF, along with “MAD”, “Cracked” and a bunch of comics. When my first pre-teen girlfriend got her picture in an issue (“Needed! More fans like . . . “) she became a celebrity among my circle of pals.

Many years later, when I started spending a lot of professional time in L.A., one of my first stops was the original Ackermansion, on Glendower Ave. in Los Feliz. He had accumulated a huge collection of science fiction paraphernalia and movie props, and whenever he was home on a Saturday he held open houses for anyone who wanted to drop by. I remember the first time I toured the house I was beside myself at what I was seeing. There in one corner, the original Creature From the Black Lagoon costume, opposite that, the robot Maria from Metropolis, on a shelf on the wall, one of the original spaceships from War of The Worlds, in a display case on the desk, the original brontosaurus and pterodactyl models from King Kong, on an opposite shelf, some of his friend Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion puppets (including the original Talos from Jason and the Argonauts), all over the house, masks, props and costumes from all the great movies that I had grown up with. And walls and walls of sci-fi books and one-sheets.

Damn, another piece of my youth gone.
