This seems like a really bad idea. How do you remake a John Wayne western without John Wayne, for cripesake? I'd rather see a reissue of the original with some other guy digitally inserted for Glen Campbell's part.

The article is wrong about the novel - the story is told from the young girl's point of view, in fact it's written in the first person.

Coens to remake ’True Grit’

LOS ANGELES - Virtuoso film directors Joel and Ethan Coen plan to remake the classic 1960s western "True Grit," which earned American screen icon John Wayne an Academy Award, Hollywood media reported Monday.

Variety said the directors of "Fargo" and "The Big Lebowski" were putting their own spin on the novel by Charles Portis telling the tale from the point of view of the stubborn 14-year-old girl at the heart of the story.

The 1968 novel, as well as the film directed by Henry Hathaway the following year, focused on Wayne's character, the irascible and aging U.S. Marshall Rooster Cogburn whom the girl hires to track down her father's killers.

The Coen brothers wrote the screenplay and the film reunites them with Scott Rudin, who produced their Oscar-winning "No Country for Old Men."

The original featured Wayne, Kim Darby as the young girl, Glen Campbell as one of the lawmen and Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper as outlaws.

Variety did not mention any of the actors starring in the remake, which will be squeezed in before the Coens begin filming "The Yiddish Policemen's Union" based on the novel written by Michael Chabon.

I would give the Coens the benefit of the doubt. They have, after all, made very, very few "bad" movies. Most of their work is fantastic.

Yeah, he was one of the highlights of True Grit and its sequel, Rooster Cogburn (he played a different character in each!).

Well now that the trailer and onesheet on this are out, I admit to being more enthusiastic about it. Partly because people around here are quite excited about it. Based on the trailer I get the feeling that the Cogburn character as played by Jeff Bridges is going to be pretty much the anti-John Wayne!

Anyway it looks to be a quality movie and should do quite well in the smaller towns -- we haven't had a good western in a long time.

I don't know what to think about the onesheet though. It's not exactly exciting or whatever. But no Trajan, at least! [Big Grin]

My booker saw it at a screening in Minneapolis last week. He said it was pretty well done and should be well received out here in the "boonies"

The trailer set to the Johnny Cash tune stood out for me. I never saw the Wayne True Grit. But I would rather see the remake with Bridges than the original wwith Wayne.

But..I recommend that you see the original with Wayne before you make your final judgement with this remake, then call your choice.

"The Duke" definitely deserved the award in the AMPAS of 1970 even though Dustin Hoffman that year was a very strong contender for the OSCAR with his role as Rico Rizzo in "Midnight Cowboy". If Wayne wasn't there, Hoffman would have won the award hands down.
