Senator Edward Kennedy has died, CNN has reported, quoting a statement from the family.

Kennedy, a member of the fabled American political family, had been battling brain cancer.

He was 77. He followed his brothers, President John F Kennedy and Senator Robert F Kennedy - who were both assassinated - as a leading Democrat in US politics.

"We've lost the irreplaceable centre of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever,'' a family statement said.

"We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice.''

The Kennedy family said he died at his home in Hyannisport, Massachussetts.

Before this thread goes political and gets locked, I'll say RIP.

He may have been a controversial senator sometimes, but you don't get re-elected as many times as he did without giving your state's people what they want.

"Have you ever tried coming out of the bathroom nude, and acted like you didn't know someone was there? Well that's too bad because that works too" - Phil Hartman as Ted Kennedy

Teddy gave Boston "The Big Dig". I lived in MA for a couple years.. most expensive place I've ever lived, but I'm sure Ted had nothing to do with that. Ted Kennedy was an institution in that state, and everyone seemed to love him. I never quite figured out, though, if it was because of what he did or didn't do, or just the fact that he was a Kennedy.
