a few days ago, I had been home drinking a few (lot of) beers. I ended up going to the local casino to get my free room. I get the rooms free and try to take advantage and stay there at least once a week. When I am at the craps table, the cocktail waitress only stops by about every hour. Its always been this way and the waitresses know that I go to the bar and buy my own drinks 99% of the time. The bar is 10 feet from the craps table. A couple nights ago, the bartender said he couldn't serve me when I walked up to the bar. No big deal, I thought to myself. Maybe I appear drunk, I dont know, all I know is that I'm feelin' good and I shrug it off.

Last night I went to the casino with my dad and my brother. My trips to the bar were cut short. Some new bartender said they could only serve me 3 beers an hour. New policy. When I walked up and ordered 2 beers, 1 draft for me and 1 bottle for my brother, the bartender wouldn't sell me both of them. I was very calm and asked "what the fuck do you mean you cant sell me 2 beers", which she just replied it was new policy. By the way, I was sober at the time. [beer]

Oh yeah, I wasn't driving either. Last thing I need is to run into a tree and have my ex and the media find out about all of the women I've slept with!

Is this a special Rich Hamilton policy, does it apply to everyone who may appear drunk (boy, there's a scientific standard . . . NOT!) or is is applied to everyone all the time?

I think here you're only allowed one drink an hour at a casino. (I don't think it's possible to get too wobbly that way)

Apparently it's a new policy. They used to just give me an IV full of beer, turn me upside down at the table, and shake me until all of my casino chips and lint fell out of my pockets. My ex wife and the pit boss would then scurry around on their hands and knees seeing who could grab the most money! [fu]

It's their way of showing that they care... [Wink]

More likely is one of:
1) Some regulating agency told them to do it
2) They decided to to avoid lawsuits or the wrath of a group in 1)

I bet someone sued over losses claiming the free drinks caused them to loose responsibility of their actions.

Riverboat Casino was it? (I used to live in Indianapolis)

I wish drinks were free there! They have actually charged twice as much for a draft beer once you are on the boat. I'm talking about the main bar that you have to walk past to enter the casino. It is owned by the casino.

Last year the casino, not the bar in the lobby, raised the price of a draft beer from $1.50 to $2.00. I actually apologized to the bartenders and cocktail waitresses because I wouldn't tip them every time I paid for a drink. That price increase sucked for them (their tips). When you pay for a drink that is 2 bucks, what is the tip? It's hard to say "keep the change" when the change is going to be bills.

In Nevada, training for TAM (Techniques in Alcohol Management) and a current TAM Card (or equivalent) is required for anyone paid to serve alcohol. I went through the training a few years ago when I was a volunteer selling hot dogs and beer at the Thomas & Mack. The training teaches you how to recognize when a customer has had enough, and various ways to deal with such potentially awkward situations.

I think most states and provinces now have similar programs. Modern case law holds alcohol-serving establishments liable for damages caused by their customers.

Also in Nevada, drinks have always been "comped" or free for active players. In my travels I've noticed that Indian and other non-Nevada casinos do charge for alcoholic drinks, assuming that they serve alcohol at all (many Indian casinos do not).
