Alabama Theatre mourns loss of Cecil Whitmire

The Alabama Theatre community is mouring the loss of the man who helped transform the historic theatre.

Cecil Whitmire died Sunday morning at his sister's home in Tennessee at the age of 74.

He started working with the Alabama Theatre in 1976, and he played the theatre's pipe organ before shows.

In the 1980s, Whitmire led efforts to save the theatre from bankruptcy and eventually became president of the company that bought the theatre and renovated it.

Funeral arrangements have not been released, but theatre officials say a memorial service will be held at the Alabama Theatre.
