Leslie Neilsen dead at 84

CANADIAN actor Leslie Nielsen, famous for his deadpan turns in Airplane! and The Naked Gun, has died aged 84, a radio station has reported.

His death was first reported in unconfirmed messages on Twitter that suggested the actor had died in the hospital after suffering from pneumonia.

His nephew, Doug Nielson, told Canadian radio station CJOB that the actor had been in the hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for 12 days and that "he just fell asleep and passed away" with family and friends by his side.

Born in Regina, Canada, Leslie Nielsen appeared in more than 100 movies and hundreds of television shows over the course of his career.

Awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he was also made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2002 despite also being a naturalized US citizen.

He was married four times, and had two children from his second marriage, Maura and Thea Nielsen.

I dont think he will mind being called Shirley too much.

We were talking about him last night. We were both agreeing that he had 2 distinct careers... One as a serious actor, and one as a comedian.

Dead - and loving it.

He led a long life and presumably had a lot of fun along the way, I guess that's what it's all about.

It's a shame I'll never meet him, but he will be remembered for a very long time.

Louis... Don't worry... I won't call you Shirley!

He was truely the last great comedic actor left in filums these days. Now all we have these days are the likes of Ben Stiller and a bunch of other do-honks that are not the least bit funny.

I hope acting in Stan Helsing didnt rob his will to live.

I am glad he lived a long and fun life. Best career decision ever was to be in Airplane. Incidentally, I had no clue the mom from Leave it to Beaver was the jive lady in Airplane.

All right. I'm going to level with you. The most important thing now is that you should all be calm, because there's no reason to panic. Now, it is true that one of the flight crew has been taken ill...slightly ill. But the other two pilots are just fine and at the controls flying the plane. The weather in Chicago is clear as a bell, and there's no reason that we won't land on schedule...safe and sound and free to pursue a life of religious fulfillment.
