GKIDS, the people who each year produce the New York International Children's Film Festival, recently acquired the North American theatrical rights for most of the films of Japan's Studio Ghibli. Beginning next month, GKIDS will begin screening The Studio Ghibli Collection: 1984 - 2008, a retrospective of 15 of the studio's films.

The retrospective will feature newly struck 35mm prints (and some DCPs from what I understand) in both English-dubbed and subtitled versions. After the retrospective completes its run in New York it will tour the major movie markets of the US and Canada during the first half of 2012. Selected titles will be available for theatrical booking starting in late 2012.

And for you F-T Ghibli fans, due to rights issues, Isao Takahata's 1988 WWII drama Grave of the Fireflies is not included in this retrospective. Likewise, Ghibli's two latest films The Secret World of Arrietty (Hiromasa Yonebayashi, 2010) and From Up on Poppy Hill (Goro Miyazaki, 2011) are not included. Arrietty will be theatrically released in North America by Disney on 17 February 2012. The North American theatrical rights for Poppy Hill have not been announced as of yet.

GKIDS is taking theatrical booking inquiries. Contact Dave Jesteadt through his email and phone links on the GKIDS distribution page.

We just ran Arrietty for some weeks, and amazingly I found the chance to see it. Lovely, just lovely! Among the best Ghiblis so far... although they're all pretty great. Did well in the box office too. Not great, but well enough.

The GhibliWiki reports GKids founder Eric Beckham stated that the Ghibli retrospectives were booked "solid" into 2013 and "on track to gross $1 million by year-end." The company acquired the North American rights to Goro Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's From Up On Poppy Hill and will release the film next March after a bid for 2013's Academy Awards.

New 35mm prints were struck for this retrospective - I wonder how the prints are holding up...
