Press Release.

Executive summary, cutting out the PR-speak bullsh!t bingo:

  • All negative and positive stocks for new motion picture production to be withdrawn by April 2013.
  • 'Eterna' range of b/w polyester separation and digital optical film recording stocks for archival preservation will continue.
  • Film manufacture for still photography will continue.
So a reprieve for archivists (of sorts) and stills photographers, but another nail in the coffin for here-and-now photochemical motion picture production, post-production and projection.
On the archival score, an interesting contrast (forgive the pun!) between Fuji's approach and the Kodak announcement posted by Mitchell. Kodak have opted for the ultra low-fade chromogenic coupler stock route and Fuji for YCM separations. Interestingly, neither appears to want to compete with the other in the same product line going forward into the medium term. Anticipated market share just ain't big enough would be my guess.
