I was perusing the program guide for this years festival. No where it seems can you find technical specifications of the presentations. Anyone here know if there will be any celluloid film run this year?

Along with the question of any film-based presentations, I'd have to wonder about all the "digital" shows. "Digital" could mean anything from a 4K DCP down to a mere standard definition DVD. Even a 240p or 360p Internet clip streaming from YouTube is "digital." But the YouTube stuff would still be cool if someone was streaming it from their freakin' iPad or Galaxy Note II.

You mean like setting their iPhone up on a tripod in front of the audience or something? I'd do that with a David Lynch movie if he was in the audience just to see what would happen.

That's even more absurd (and funny) than the situation I was imagining. Someone should try that and just bark, "this is art" to anyone who complains.

I figured someone would just have their iPad and iTunes patched into the video projection system, or have a severely YouTube compressed .MP4 playing from an Android device via USB connection.

Or require that each audience member have their own iPad or iPhone and the projection server streams it to them.

I know a couple of the projectionists at Sundance and will find out.

In the recent past, they have limited their accepted formats to 35mm or 16mm film and HDCAM video. I believe that some venues can take DCPs now (with HDCAM or film backup copies). They do not show DVDs, Blu-Rays, or anything of that sort.

Last year: 198 video, 35 35-mm, and zero 16-mm.

2008 may have been the most recent year for 16-mm.

From a message Chapin Cutler sent to the Art House Convergence Google Group list:
quote:

This year all venues will support 35-mm, DCP, and HDCAM, except for Salt Lake City Library where there is no room for 35-mm.

For the first time, we are allowing anyone who wishes to supply a DCP to do so. This year, for the first time, all our screen washes, trailers, sponsor tags etc. will also be DCP's. Our projectors are all 2K.

It's a pity that all these arty, indie film types tend to be Apple fanboys. If they were willing to go with Android, they could bring their own projector and do away with the booth altogether!

This year, seven 35-mm features and shorts. The rest were DCP and HDCAM.

Correction and update.

230 titles. Eight (8) titles on 35-mm film. Six (6) 35-mm film titles ran as backup to DCP. Two (2) titles played as film-only.
