Oh no not these again.

They do not capture the lost art of film projection. They capture the current trend of photographers trying to be "unique".

But Joe, apparently the lost "art" of film projection lies within really old projection booths with antiquated equipment and stoned operators staring off into nowhere.

There is more of an art to putting on an absolutely flawless show in a modern booth than those places. Some people will argue a place like this is too sterile or lacking character, but the presentation IS the most important aspect. Nobody gives a flip is someone is up there hand rewinding reels or not. The customers care about the final picture and sound in the auditorium, as they should.

But the operator does not normally pick and choose the major equipment that he has to work with. The "art" (and science) of the job is in putting on the best possible show given the equipment that is in place, and (possibly) advocating for different equipment if the existing equipment is unsuitable. It is, however, unfair to put the blame for badly equipped venues on the operators.

There is a different art/science in picking, choosing, and installing the best equipment for a given venue, but that is typically not done by the operators themselves. I certainly agree with Brad that good equipment and installation can make a big difference in what the audience sees and hears.

I have to say i like the nice clean booth that Brad posted - how clean it looks and the interlock looks quite a setup too. Most of the ones in the article could do with a little house keeping to put it politely and the projectionists don't look very happy in their work either (perhaps worried about the digits coming?) Did anyone get as far as the photo with the lamp house door with the light on.. lets hope they were all wearing sun glasses (health and safety and all!)
