A gunman who opened fire in a movie theater in suburban Nashville, Tenn. was killed in a shootout with police Wednesday.

There was no immediate information on any possible injuries to theater patrons attending a showing of "Mad Max."

A police department spokesman said the shooter was armed with a gun and a hatchet. When police arrived on the scene, the gunman fired at an officer who then returned fire. A SWAT team also on the scene fired at him, as well.

The man also reportedly left two backpacks that were being examined by hazardous device officers.

A metro police dispatcher told The Tennessean newspaper the shooting was reported at 1:13 p.m. at the Carmike Hickory Hollow Cinema in Antioch, Tennessee.

Nashville Police confirmed in a tweet that an active shooting situation was reported, and the the suspect was dead.

What is it with these boneheads? Maybe it's just not cool to shoot up a school or a church anymore.

[sigh] I guess it's a matter of time till there will need to be metal detectors everywhere. I wonder if the NRA would help fund them?

Aside from any short term drop in business that these shooting cause, with now 3 locations in 3 different states it will be getting more difficult for theatre owners (and their lawyers) to claim that these are unforeseen occurrences and that they should not be held responsible for not having sufficient security.

Of course, the cost of adding metal detectors, exit alarms, and armed security staff will necessitate raising prices, which makes going out to a movie even less price competitive with alternative viewing options. This is a lose/lose situation.

A man acting suspicious was arrested at Cinemark Tinseltown in Chico, CA this week.

Chico >> A Chico man was arrested Monday afternoon after allegedly bringing a concealed firearm to the Tinseltown movie theater on East Avenue, according to the Chico Police Department.

Daniel Darrington, 29, was arrested after police were twice called to the movie theater for a report of a suspicious man, according to police.

About 5:35 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to the theater after a bullet was found near a seat where the man, later identified as Darrington, had reportedly been sitting, police said. Darrington was reported to have been acting suspicious during a showing of a movie as well.

About 4:15 p.m. Monday, police again were called to the theater, as Darrington was reportedly acting suspicious during a showing of the same movie he watched Sunday, police said.

Officers searched Darrington’s backpack and allegedly found a loaded pistol inside, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of illegally possessing a concealed loaded firearm in public.

With Darrington’s consent, police subsequently searched his home and did not find evidence that he was involved in any further criminal activity, police said.

On July 23, three people were killed and nine were injured when a 59-year-old gunman opened fire in a crowded Louisiana movie theater during a showing of “Trainwreck,” according to news reports. The gunman was among the dead.
