CUCKOO [35mm]
Neon Releasing
6 Reels
SCOPE / Dolby SRD™
Lately we've been getting 35mm prints of certain new releases, mainly
from Neon, A24 and Amazon, which we use for "opening night" or
"opening weekend" shows only, before switching to DCP for the rest of
the week. Almost all of these have been direct-to-positive Cinevator®️
prints from COLORLAB in MD, USA.
I noticed during inspection that this print, which was fresh from the lab,
had water spots on a couple of reels, although they did not show up on
screen unless you were really looking for them.. A regular customer who
had seen both the 35mm & DCP versions, made a comment about the
35mm having a different 'look' and color balance than the DCP. I did
check out a few min of the DCP version over the weekend, and there
was definitely a difference. The other thing I noticed when running the
35mm was that the end title credit crawl, which were in somewhat small
typeface, had a granular look and a 'shimmer' not evident in the DCP
version. Ironically, CUCKOO was shot on film, but I'm guessing all the
post production was done electronically.
REEL 6 was less than 1k/ft, and consisted of a final scene about
90sec long, and the rest was all credits.
Today's Fun Foto: THIS was "Reel 6"
(I included the sanitizer for size scale)
It was only about 800ft long.
Now that's really CUCKOO!
