Our movie group saw the new Ti West film 'MaXXXine' at the Sony Drafthouse New Mission Theatre in San Francisco on Friday July 5th at the 4 20PM showing in the large Theatre Film-Tech Forums cinema.
Most of us enjoyed the film very much. I never saw his first two movies or Mia Goth in a movie. She was great walking the sleezy streets of Hollywood.. One of the things I liked that It was shot in Hollywood CA not in some outside the USA city to look like the LA/Hollywood area. Loved seeing the old Pacific Warner Cinerama Theatre in the background along with the Universal City backlot plus many other Hollywood Blvd locations like strip clubs, dance discos, store windows, the Chinese Theatre entrance and many other movie city backgrounds The Hollywood sign did look like a fake studio set up?
The best part of the movie was Kevin Bacon. He was over the top. The sound was great with some nice 1985 type music and spot on special split wall surround effects.
The thing that bothered me was the flat look the scope movie had. A24 did a good job making It look like the mid 80's but there was no deep blacks or rich color. The whole production looked very pale to me not rich in detail. I liked the different ways they went from scope to 1.33 on many parts. I don't know If it was shot on 35mm film and then put on DCP as some cinemas are showing It in 35mm film.
What's bad that It is released now when most big cities have the two new animated kid movies playing in the best large screens so It leaves poor 'MaXXXine' to play in the smaller spaces in many cities.
The scope wide screen with proper masking at the New Mission in San Francisco is of nice size. My projectionist friend Jim was off but he did set the curtain close cue for the end A24 credits. No open and close at the start when most people would have seen them after the trailers.
As usual at the NM we were the only people left in the theatre when the credits started to roll. The wait staff is in such a hurry to clean the 350 seat cinema for the next show they just make as much dish /drink glass plate noise talk ect and block my view of the screen as I like to stay to the end to watch what is on the roll credits When I buy the Blu Ray I won't have this problem.
Will write to the new owners at Sony Theatres about this clean up problem at the New Mission Theatre SF. They should not go in to start cleaning unless everyone has left.
Show the movie at a midnight screening I think most movie goers will enjoy It. The press didn't seem to like MaXXXine but we all did.
