I'd say that the ultimate in elevator music would be "The Girl From Ipenema" played by the 101 Strings Easy Listening Orchestra.

I bet that there are people who would pay big money to get an original recording of that song. Most people don't think it exists anymore.

Somewhere amongst all my junk, I have a Seeburg 1000 album that included that very cut. It was one of the "Industrial" library discs from the late 60s or maybe early 70s, made by Capitol. I grabbed it and two others about 10 years ago when you could still get entire box sets of them for about $20.

Part of the problem is that it's almost impossible to tell exactly what the version of the song is because shots are so closely intercut.

The song is not on the soundtrack album. (Why would it be?)

It's not listed in the credits, either.

It was likely cut in by somebody in the sound department using some stock recording that the studio (Universal) had rights for then it was promptly forgotten.

Most people assume that the original recording has been lost or forgotten but, if you look around on the internet, you'll find message boards where people say they'd "give anything" to have a full recording of the song or to find a place where they can get it.

Ah yes, the lift scene. I admittedly haven't seen Blues Brothers but I am aware of that scene. It's also been widely parodied and copied. Guess I forgot about the music they used though!

Another favourite of mine is the Cantata 700 by 3M which uses 26 hour loop tapes, and very kindly someone has uploaded hours and hours of it onto youtube. The quality isn't great due to tapes degrading, but it's nice to have a record that it existed.

Tapes degrading, and the player he used was the older model that has a ton of hours on it and has developed some amplifier problems. (The head was also probably worn down to nothing, which may partly explain why the audio was so muddy and hissy.) Last year he acquired a newer second-generation player which has considerably better audio quality, and his uploads since June have been prepared using it.

Hopefully he'll start uploading those tapes to archive.org, including the Muzak ones. He had those up on Youtube for a little while but eventually took them down because the record industry lawyers. They had gotten so hacked to shreds by the end that I guess he just finally said "sod it" and deleted them. He says uploading tapes to archive is on his to-do list but the files are also around 10 GB each.
