    Screenvision Gains Ad Volume: Calls In-Theater Ads Increasingly 'Relevant,' 'Vital'


    In-theater advertising company Screenvision says industry attendance is now at 80% to 85% of its levels pre-2019 -- and things are looking up.

    “We are more relevant and vital than ever as a platform,” said John Partilla, chief executive officer of Screenvision at a pre-upfront meeting with Television News Daily.

    In contrast to other declining media, Partilla said in-theater business for marketers looks much better -- especially “as linear impressions continue to decline.”

    As a result, Christine Martino, chief revenue officer of Screenvision, says there is continued growth in advertising volume at the company -- now “5% to 10%” of the levels of 2019 for its in-theater pre-show.

    Partilla also highlights the rising importance of “attention” metrics. Cinema viewing has a 75% “active” attention score for its video advertising, according to Amplified Intelligence. This is between two and six times that of TV, CTV, social media, and digital.

    Screenvision says marketers continue to return to the big screen, with automotive advertisers remaining the top in-theater advertiser.

    Not surprisingly, close behind automotive advertisers are premium video streaming marketers -- which many assume are the main competition to traditional movie theaters. The list here includes all the major premium video platforms: Amazon, Apple TV+, Paramount+, Peacock, Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max.

    Martino says 25% of its inventory is currently bought on programmatic demand-side platforms including The Trade Desk and private marketplaces.

    For those buying into Screenvision’s pre-show, where marketers run their messages, the company says marketers have seen on average a 10% incremental sales lift and $2.33 return on ad spend (ROAS) for recent campaigns in cinema, according to research from Cinelytics.

    Currently, Screenvision reaches 40 million consumers monthly, as the company steadily returns to 2019 levels. Screenvision also sees it as a positive sign that Amazon and Apple each want to spend $1 billion or so on a full slate of movies per year.

    “We know we can grow our audience,” says Martino.

    In its upfront presentation Tuesday, Screenvision said it is forming two new specialty cinema advertising networks: Screenvision Media’s Black Cinema Advertising Network, with more than 3,800 screens and Screenvision’s Hispanic Cinema Advertising Network, with more than 3,700 screens.

    Screenvision is partnering with TikTok for “TikTok on the Big Screen,” a customized 60-second segment during Screenvision’s pre-show, where marketers can activate against curated TikTok content.

    The Screenvision Media cinema advertising network is on 13,500 screens in more than 2000 locations in 50 states and 94% of U.S. markets.

    Since I don't own a theatre, would some of you enlighten me as to the revenue Screenvision generates for each screen in your location? Why do I ask? <Warning, rant coming>

    Because for me this is the absolute last straw. Our society has become so toxic due to the overuse of stupid, unfettered platforms like Tik Tok, a Chinese owned spy platform that the mindless drones of today think is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I am fed up with constantly being bombarded with ads for that shithouse app. How fed up? I am close to terminitaing BOTH of my YouTube channels and eliminating ALL Google owned usage for my online work. I my even totally cut the online cord if I have to. Why? Because despite using the "report ad" option, Google/Youtube continues to bombard me with Tik Tok ads (as well as the foreign hook up with pussy ads). Enough is enough.

    IF I did actually own a theatre or major chain, I would immediately remove Screenvision ads from ALL of my screens, tell Screenvision to put their service firmly up where the sun never shines, and deal with the revenue loss to my company in different and better ways. (I would go so far as to create my OWN ads service, highlighting LOCAL and relevant businesses ONLY. Would it generate as much or close to the same revenue? Probably since there would be no middleman i.e. Screenvision.) Even if it didn't I would not care but I sure as fuck would sleep soundly at night knowing MY THEATRE was not pushing toxic trash on MY customers. <rant off.>

    Our country is in such a mess because we the people do NOTHING to push back against corporate or other agendas that are dangerous, toxic and promote hateful or useless ideas. It has to stop, and for my part I no longer support ANY company or entity that has pandered to the radical left and its agendas.

    As theatre owners, parents, and hopefully just a person with some sense of morals, I ask everyone here who has the authority to act in this case, to question yourself: Do I want MY KIDS to be force-fed targeted content of ANY KIND when all we wanted to do is go to a movie to ESCAPE from all the drama and trouble going on in real life? Would YOU consider dropping Screenvision from your operations because of this latest bonehead move?

    Think about it. WE are on the edge of a very dangerous conflict by the very people behind this toxic app. Is it worth it to continue to support them in ANY way?

      I know that my theatre is insignificant to everyone except me and the people who live around here, but the only on-screen advertising I do is one or two trailers for the next few movies coming here.

      "Turn off your cellphone" "Trailer" "Trailer" "Our Feature Presentation!" "Movie"

      That's it.

        Advertising seems to be the latest get rich quick scheme. It's everywhere. Netflix now offers an ad supported level at a slightly lower price. I'm happy to pay a little more to not have to deal with ads. People send me links to You Tube videos, such as those from the Antique Wireless Association. They are great videos, but every few minutes it is interrupted for an ad for a get rich scheme, plans for a ghost gun, or some medical quackery. So, no more You Tube!

          Pre-show ads are a brilliant example of how nonsensical and unhealthy the exhibition industry really is.

          On the one hand, advertisers are paying actual money to show ads in theaters without people in them. Thanks to assigned seating, the days of getting there early for a good seat are long gone. Most people don't arrive until showtime now.

          But then look at it from the exhibitor's perspective:

          Wait, you'll pay me money to put something on my screen that no one likes and many people loathe! And it actively encourages my customers to stop patronizing me by promoting all sorts of content they can stay home and watch on "all the major premium video platforms!"

          How is that a good idea?


          When pre-show ads first showed up, I wondered if they made enough money to offset the costs of repairing or replacing screens that were damanged or ended up with candy or something stuck to them because the curtains were open before the movie. Now I know that no one cares.

              At first, I actually read the headline wrong. I thought it said "Screenvision Ads Gain Volume" - - and
              I thought that meant they were getting louder! (I know some trailers are, for sure, but that's 'old news')

              $25,000 for a ½page, and as much as $75-100k to get your ad on the back cover.
              I remember asking my dad if it was worth that much money. His answer was basically something like
              "Son, If it wasn't worth it, the clients wouldn't spend it"- -

              When pressed for more details, he'd point out that (at that time) LIFE magazine had something like
              5 or 6 million subscriptions, and when you throw in worldwide news-stand sales, it was read by over
              10million people a week. . So, if you broke it down, you were only paying something like 35-50¢
              per ad/view . (The actual numbers may be a bit different, but you get the idea) -

                im with tonvs rant ! in all the theatres i have worked owned or operated, i was lucky to be around people like myself...considering the art of movies and escapism go hand in hand...the last thing i want to see after paying admission is commercial advertisements! even back in the slide show days...the only advertising i have ever shown on screen in my theatre is a seasonal holiday LOCAL merchant adv that i used to get from filmack...i would let the snack bar girls go around town and sell the ads for a modest cost, once i paid filmack for making the snipe the profits would be divided amongst the girls...the ads would run from dec 1 thru new years day. the locals loved it! other than that, trailers and public service or policy snipes were all that were exhibited

                  We run a preshow reel of advertising from local businesses. We've been solicited by companies like ScreenVision but I just toss them out. Are we missing out on revenue? Probably, but we like our scrappy homemade reel.

                    Yes, I'm always amazed it wasn't in the US first. We've had screen ads since at least the 60s, and I know other European countries are the same (I have several lovely advert reels from the 60s/70s from Italy). There's a lot of nostalgia for some of the old cinema ads too.

                      Holy moly Tony.. I recommend doing something that will calm you down. Your post and location showing Idaho suggests you're a far right extremist, not a good group to be part of.

                      Tiktok is loved by many and is great entertainment. I myself never thought I'd like it but downloaded it and am pretty addicted now. The more you like videos that you enjoy, the more the algorithm sends you similar videos. I love funny videos, cute animals, food, travels vids especially and political ones that show how fascist the right has become in states like Texas and Florida. Plenty of videos making fun of people who believe conspiracy theories. I seriously watch a whole range of videos and also see how crazy and violent some people are on the right, making death threats against people they don't agree with.

                      We all know it's Chinese owned but no one cares because it's fun. I don't post any videos myself but I enjoy the entertainment I derive from the app. I'm assuming this article means Screenvision will have up to 60 seconds of appropriate content from Tiktok that the audience will enjoy such as funny videos. Why would you assume there's going to be an agenda or something bad? You should really change your mindset and stop hating people so much. You're being force fed lies and believing conspiracies that promote violence and hate towards people different than you.

                      There is no agenda to force feed people anything. The thing I assume you're suggesting is an agenda is INCLUSION & EQUALITY. For people to suggest that those two words are promoting a hateful agenda is mind boggling to me. This country is a melting pot of people and no one should be hated because they don't fit your mold. Love/tolerate everyone and hate no one.

                        We run soundies, cartoons, shorts such as Abbott and Castillo that are public domain. These are things that would have been popular when the theater was built. Next to the entertainment is a small ad. This gets people to the theater a little earlier and people who get to the theater earlier tend to spend more money at the concession stand. I program these as part of the presentation the same way I do the trailers. There is some pretty cool stuff in public domain.

                          Pardon me for interrupting, but I wanted to remind both Tony and Darin [messages above] that one of the rules of F-T is that "no politics" is to be part of these pages. I think both of you have steered dangerously close to "political" statements, and I might suggest you "cool your jets", or the Forum Admin. might come along and feel it appropriate to cool you down involuntarily. Just a thought.

                            That's strange. I constantly use YouTube, and Google somewhat and I don't think I've EVER seen an ad for Tik Tok (and I don't use Tik Tok). And while I get SPAM mail for "meet Russian women", etc. I don't think I've ever gotten ads for porn sites and the like. I think you need to delete all your cookies and start over (and also use a pop-up blocker). And for all the claims about vital and relevant on-screen advertising, my experience is that no one in the theater is paying much attention to the pre-show. The lights are more than half up and most people are staring at their phones or talking to each other. Maybe it works on a subliminal level, but I can't recall a single product I've seen in a preshow in any of the seven films I've seen in a theater so far this year. IMO, Screenvision working with TikTok is most likely much ado about nothing.

                              Martin's comment about everyone on their cell phones while the ads are playing makes me wonder if folks who play these ads before the shows are undermining their "turn off your cell phone" policies by having this kind of thing going on before the start of the movie.

                              If I can sit here and text while the Chrysler ad is on the screen why can't I text while the movie is on the screen?
