My niece and her husband are wildlife biologists who work for the federal government in some of the most remote areas you can possibly imagine. Right now they're spending three weeks on Banks Island in the NWT tagging snow geese.
They both carry handguns and some kind of tear gas grenades when they are out doing that work because you never know what unfriendly animal might suddenly turn up.
But you'd never see them carrying a gun in town or city, of course.
